ALASKA DAILY EMPIRE 'Telephone No. 3-7-4 JOHN W. TROY, Editor and Manager. Published by the EMPIRE PRINTING COMPANY ^ Sot*rod as second-claaa matter November 7, 1912 at the postofflce at Ju oeau. Alaska. under the Act of March 3. 1S79. s SUBSCRIPTION RATES: Q?e year, by mall $10.00 Six months. by mall 5.00 Per month, delivered 1.00 COLORADO'S CRIME. THOSE statutes proposed by thi Governor of Colorado and abou to be adopted by the Legislatun are good, but their enforcement wil be better. Had Colorado enforced the laws shi now has most of the grievances of thi strikers would have been automatical ly eliminated. Had Colorado main tained her own authority few of thi indescribable atrocities that have tak en place in this civil war could by anj possibility have happened. Whatever crimes have been commit ted by mine-operators and strikers, thi greatest crime has been committed bj the State of Colorado: for Its crimi is a crime against free government. Goethnls against free tolls? Is I possible that this man. in whom wi had all taken such pride as a distin guished American, was digging tha canal for Great Britain all the timi that we were bestowing praise? Wil Hearst and McLean dare say so? 1 not, shouldn't they retract some o the things they have said about Wil son and Bryan? PLAYING WITH FIRE. JE. CHILBERG. Scott Bone anc other Seattle business men hav< returned from Eastern trips wher? they associated with those ol "Big Business." enthused with the prospect of defeating the Democratic party and the Wilson administration at the next elections. What are we to believe from this? Are we to take it as an indication that all this talk about accepting the President's "New Freedom" for business was mere pre tense? Are we to understand that the criticism of the foreign policy of the administration by Champ Clark, Hearst. McLean and other Democrats and pretended Democrats and the jingoes generally has inspired those of "Big Business" with the belief that a chance is before them to get Wilson out of the way while they reinstate the reactionary elements in power and restore the old class-advantage system? In short, was "Big Business" simply playing possum? 0 If this surmise is correct, some peo 1 pie are playing with Are. If a com 0 bination should be formed strong to I. unhorse the Wilson administration and 'the party that is devoting its efforts 0' to eliminate class distinctions and re 0 establish equality before the law in -: this country those who accomplish It " may live to regret their work. If it is ' demonstration that this Nation must * be governed by a class in the interest '' of a class rather than by all classes for all classes? If it shall come to the - point where all must be with one class J or the other?it will be found that mil ?' lions who have believed that the com > petltive system with equality of op portunity is yet possible in the coun try will align themselves with the t class that is not as high as "Big Busi- ' * noss" when measured by the financial * | scale. If the "System" should be again t restored to power it is not likely that ' those who next defeat it will present 1 a program that is as satisfactory or as f fair to the general business interests f of the Nation as is the policy of the - present administration. Gen. Villa, be his faults what they may. is the one man in Mexico who [seems to have the clearest ideas of ' what all the fuss south of the Rio * Grande Is about, and what the equities ' of the situation require. r ( It is always satisfactory to Alaska ? when the center of activity is trans 1 ferred from the State. War or Navy 1 Departments to the Interior Depart ment. It is more than satisfactory ; when the transfer is from all three of the Departments at the same time. Juneau's water front street won't i down. The people will never be whol ly satisfied until they have the thor- . oughfare. The Ladies' Musical club and its large appreciative audience last night gave a complete demonstration that . commercial and industrial develop ment is not the only kind of develop , ment that interests the people here.
