THE Democratic convention that i
has been called to meet at i
Skngway, August 3. will be a j
convention foe ail the Democrats of t
Alaska The call for it was issued by :
the regular and only constituted offi
cers of the Democratic party of the
Territory. It is not a call for a con
vention of any faction or coterie of
Democrats.
The convention will belong to the
whole Democratic party of Alaska,
not to the present officers of it or
any faction of it. The primaries that
will select the 200 delegates that will
constitute it will be open to every
Democratic voter, man or woman, in
Alaska.
Undoubtedly a large majority of the
people of Alaska are disposed to af
filiate with and vote the Democratic
party ticket in Alaska this year. If
the ticket and the declarations of the
convention are representative of the
real Alaskan sentiment. They will
do this. The Empire believes, if the
nominee of the convention for Dele
gate to Congress is the real choice
of the rank and file of the Democratic
party, and if the platform rings true
on Alaskan problems. If the nominee
is the real choice of the voting raass
<s he will be elected, because he will
have behind him a united party and
every man and woman who is desir
ious of affiliating with the party for
the purpose of showing appreciation
of the splendid work the Wilson ad-'
ministration has done and is doing
for Alaska.
The situation makes it the plain
duty of the men and women who con
stitute the Democratic party of Al
aska to use that which is their own.
it makes it their duty to attend the'
primaries, and there to select dele-.
<ntes to the Territorial convention
that will be truly representative of -
them and their desires. That there
r
ran be no mistake about It. they {
should instruct their delegates as to .
any dellnite conclusions they arrive
at, and there should be organization ^
and discussion of these matters dur- ?
ing the month that will intervene -
between the present and the conven- v
ing of the. convention. t
It Is every voter's duty to scrutinize t
the names of those who otfer tltjm
selves as candidates for delegates to
the convention; to know whore they
stand, and to vote for those who will 1
represent his views.
!.et us make the convention a real
convention of the Democratic party
of Alaska as it is designed to be. Let
the rank and file run it. select its
nominee and write its platform.
There are those whom special privi
lege seekers hate worse than they dis
like agitators?the men who devote;
their energy and influence and offi
cial positions to reconstructlbn on thq
basis of equal rights. The fight on '
Wilson is more bitter than ever it was
on Roosevelt. Roosevelt agitated. Wll 1
son Is reconstructing.
Nome saloon men and patrons of '
their bars are said to be in a war '
over the relative merit from a stand- J
point of public service between five- <
cent beer and beer at two for a quar- (
ter.
