WILSON SHOWS SPEED Washington correspondents agree that the defiant Jackson's day speech of President Wilson has stunned the opposition to the Administration. The intimation that he will be a candidate for re-election, and his challenge to his opponents to do their worst, has caused widespread dismay. The Eastern papers gen erally admit that despite the efforts of opponents to inject smal ler matters into range of public vision, Wilson's speech has made it clear that the issues of the next campaign will be the Presi dent and his administration, and that the President will not per mit the people to forget the main problems that have come up for consideration and decision during the course of his admin tration, and that that means that the President has chosen the strategic ground upon which to fight the battle of 1916. The vigor of the support the administration ship-purchase bill is receiving has, it is said, added to the consternation caused by the Indianapolis speech. It has been a practical demonstra tion of the compactness and strength of the Democratic organi zation and the unanimity of his support of the President. The hope that the party would quarrel and break into factions on account of patronage differences has been disipated, and the party is showing form in the face of the opposition similar to that exhibited by the Sixty-Second Congress which contributed so largely to the 1912 victory, and that of the early .days of the Wilson administration. IMMIGRATION AFTER THE WAR. (New York World.) < Asked if there will not be a great influx of foreign labor : after the European War, to make our employment problem more serious, Judge Gary of the Steel Corporation says he "can't ev en make a guess on that." + This is a consideration much used in forcing along the re strictive Immigration Bill in Congress. But it can find no sup port in general economic principles. Europe's^ labor supply, which before the war was excessive, will certainly after the war be comparatively scarce. The countries ravaged and wasted by war will be under a supreme necessity to rebuild from the ruins. Labor for some years thereafter should be in great demand at wages which will make the American rate less appealing. There is an analogy in experience from our own Civil War, ( whose wastes and exhaustion were followed not by any emigra- < tion but by a great and increasing immigration. We not only ! drew heavily upon Europe for labor to make good our losses, ( but for materials to use in the upbiulding on such a scale as to \ keep the balance of trade against us year after year. We shall be more likely after this war to be engulfed by a ' European demand for American goods than by an outflow of j European labor on the scale prevailing in recent years. THE WHITE HOUSE BABY. The first baby born in the White House in twenty-two years, c the first boy born there since Tyler's time, is deeply and legiti- \ mately. interesting to many millions of people. 11 Excepting the four children of Major Donelson, Jackson's ? secretary, the White House babies have all belonged to the im mediate families of Presidents. "-One, Esther Cleveland, was the [ child of a President. James Madison Randolph, Jefferson's > grandson,; Mary Louise Adams,-and Tyler's grandchildren, Let- ? itia Tyler and Robert Jones, are dead. Julia Grant, daughter 1 of Gen. Fred D. Grant, now Princess Cantacuzene in Russia, was f the only Presidential grandchild born in the Executive mansion in more than seventy years until Master Sayre made his ap pearance. i The children of the White House have been a more numer ous body. Robert Lincoln is the dean of the corps, ex-Secretary \ of War, ex-Minister and man of affairs. As long as both Presidents and babies are of interest to normal humanity, White House children will never cease to at tract attention and sympathy. Fortunately, Master Francis " Sayre, Jr., is too young to be spoiled by knolwedge of the com- J motion he has caused. ? The almost, daily advance in freight rates from the United I, States to Europe and the consequent constant increasing cost of American products that are so greatly needed on the other e< side of the Atlantic, are creating a compelling desire in Great Britain to see those German ships that are interned in Ameri- i? can ports in harness, even if the harness should be "made in U. S. A." u lc An occasional break in the cable between Alaska and Seat tie at least serves to make us realize the real service the United a, States did us when it provided us with the opportunity for tele- ? graphic communication, and of the practical benefit Alaska is ? securing from the United States army signal corps. !
