Aug. 16?The new mining law regulating the hours that laborers shall work Is causing much hardship In the Ruhr district, accord ing to Marshal L. W. Edwin, who re turned to Fairbanks yesterday, aftor attending court at the lower river town. While in Ruby, Marshal Erwin made a trip to Long Creek and there found all plants shut down, the miners hav ing gone out on strike, refusing to work eight hours for $4, while the operators claim that they cannot af i ford to pay more. Several of the larger outfits have given up the Idea of continning op orations this year and have gone so tar as to flood their shafts. Up to the time that the marshal left for Fairbanks, there was no sign of a set tlement of the strike. This fact makes conditions serious at the lower river camp, for miners and merchants: It's no secret, the smart men about town are all wearing Benjamin Clothes. TELEGRAM! SmooL who returned from Anchorage last ev ening on the Alliance, is really the agent of Secretary Franklin K. Lane and is really here to study harbor conditions. This Is a fact that the Gateway discovered soon after the departure of Mr. Smoot from Seward to Anchorago a couple of weeks ago. When he was here the paper had only an inkling of the truth and Mr. Smoot did not apparently at that time desire the publication of the fact. The positive information was secured by the Gateway in communi cating with the outside. On his way here Mr. Smoot inspected the harbor at Cordova, notwithstanding the has ty statements to the contrary made in the sister city, and ho made not only a careful observation of harbors, etc., there but he has done likewise in this region and Cook Inlet It is now a positive fact that Mr. Smoot has been sent here by Mr. Lane for the purpose stated. Mr. Smoot stated today that when be told the Gateway on his last visit that he "came here at his own ex pense" he told the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, but he admits now that he came on gov ernment business and that he paid his own expenses merely because he wished to be at liberty at any timo to go back to see his father who has been ill.?(Seward Gateway.)
