WATER CARNIVAL
AT A. B. TONIGHT
Many of those usiug the A. B. tank
last night and also many of the spec
tators, were slightly worrlod for a time
when they noticed Dr. Wm. Palllster
throwing something resembling brown
sugar In the tank and immediately .
wild stories, of Infection began to cir- ,
culate. The stuff thrown Into the tank
was cuprlc sulphate solution, which
Is the greatest germlcldo knoWn to
medical science, and it Is used to
purify the water.
When teen today Dr. Palllster was
very omph&tlc in his statements that <
tho solution is absolutely harmless j
to everything except disease germs of
all kinds. When some of tho solu
tion meets with one of the little
wiggly germs, the germ loses the bout (
and immediately curls up its toes and
dies. The solution is slightly bene
ficial to the eyes, !f any gets Into
them and is harmless otherwise if
small quantities are used. The solution
will be introduced Into the water ov- ^
ery time the tank is refilled and will
Insure those us!ng the swimming pool
absolutely against any chance of in
fection from disoase germs in- the (
water.
The tank still continues to be pop- ,
ular wlth^ tho public, but will be clos
ed tomorrow night for a few days for
necessary finishing touches around the
building. When it Is reopened it will
be for the members of the Arctic
nrotherhood and the members of
their' families only. The outer door ?
will be locked and keys will be dis
tributed among the members. <
Tonight the general public will bo
admitted at a charge of twenty-five '
cents each, with tho privilege of <
swimming if they desire, or watching
the water carnival, or both. The swim
ming will last until ten o'clock, at
which time the tank will bo cleared
and the water carnival will start Tho j
arrangement of the carnival has been
very impromptu but many good swim- '
mere have entered tho different
events and it promises to be very in- ]
tercstine all of the time. Some fancy
diving, by both women and men for
distance and form will be done, as i
well as fast distance swimming.
Tho following program has been ar
ranged. subject to change: <

TELEPHONE FRANCHISE IS

WILBUR SAYS BRIQUETS t
BECOMINB MOST POPULAR \
C. H. Wilbur, agent for the Paclf- i
1c Coast Coal Co.. has returned from I
a trip to Seattle. Speaking of con- t
dlttons of the coal market he stated
that tho most noticeable thing on l
this coast In the past six months, has c
been the Increased use of briquets.
The Pacific Coast Coal Co. haa now
established selling agencies from I
Nome. Alaska to San Diego, Califor
nia and everywhere they are having a
heavy demand. After many labora
tory and burning tests, the company
Is now manufacturing what Is known ,
as the Diamond Briquet, and this has
proven to be an almost ideal fuel, ,
having great heating power, and at j
the same time superior lasting quail- i
ties. Recent tests to comparo the i
briquets with British Columbia coals, 1
have shown the briquets have about '
ten per cent, more heating value, and ,
considerable Ices ash.

BUILDING CONTRACTORS
WILL MEET MONDAY NIGHT
? ? ?
A meeting of tho building contrac
tors In the city will bo held Monday
evening at 7 o'clock for tho purpose
of organizing an association to com
pete with outside contractors and to 1
maintain the wage scale of Alaska,
The meeting will be held In tho new
building of E. J. Dalley near the Fer
ry slip.
For some time tho local contractors
have been forced to compete with
outside contractors who have been
figuring their wages on the Seattle
scale and who have been importing
their help. This has forced the local
men to work under a great handicap
as the outside scale of wages is not
as high as the wages paid In Alas
ka.
