Brown, a manufactur ing Jeweler of San Francisco, is in the city having arrived on a re cent boat and is at the Alaskan hotel. Mrs. It. A. Buchanan, wife of the Rev. Buchanan of Sitka, arrived on the City of Seattle yesterday to at tend the convention of the W. C. T. C. and is at the Castincuu. Leo MacCortnack, who is one of the well known business men of Wrangell and who has been at the GaBtincau hotel for the past week, left for his home on the City of Se attle yesterday. SUPERINTENDENT HAYES RETURNS FROM INSPECTION . .J. C. Muyes. superintendent of roads, for the First Division, return ed oh the City of Seattle from a round trip to Skagway, Haines and Sitka. Mr. Hayes reports that the road work in the other sections of the division is going on as well as can be expected on account of the -weather conditions. A large force of men are working on the Skagway road to the summit of the White Pass and about -'0 men are working on the Sitka-Jamestown Bay road. The Haines road work Is not being pushed thin summer and nothing will be done there until next spring. PRAISES JUNEAU STABILITY. Andrew Chilberg, president of the Scandinavian-American Hank, of Seattle, who was in Juneau yester day afternoon while the City of Se attle was in port, was highly en thusiastic in the praise he bestowed upon the stability of Juneau. He said, in speaking of the city's ap pearance, that "Juneau Is growing In the right way; it is really a line little city, and has- every ap pearance of having a foundation as solid as the rock of ages." Mr. Chilberg is accompanied on the trip by J. D. Jordan, of Min neapolis, a banker and a long time personal frieud. AL-KI TO MAKE JUALIN The steamer Al-Ki will arrive from the south tomorrow morning and will make a trip to Junlin be fore sailing southbound according to word received by the local agency. Thr ' general convention meets once In three years to transact the btinlness of the church.' It consists of two houses?the House of Bishops and the House of Clerical and Lay Deputies. The former Is composed of all the Bishops. The House of Clerical and Hay Deputies is made up of four Cleri cal and four Lay Deputies chosen from bach Diocese. One Clerical and one Lay Deputy Is allowed to each Missionary district. The Senior Bishop of the church in order of consecration Is president of the House of Bishops with the tl | tie of Presiding Bishop. The character of the men compos ing the General Conventions has al ways been of the highest o'rdcr both in the matter of intelligence and of zeal in promoting the Church's wel fare. The work of the Convention Is greatly expedited by numerous com infttecB and commissions which pro pare the various proposals made, lor intelligent, final action. Various Committcs. Here the Bish ops unite with the Clerical and Lay Deputies in one body, while the re ports of missionary progress and 1 missionary needs are received and j freely discussed, and new mission- 1 ur.v bishops ure elected. As a conse quence there is a shortage of wa ter both at the fort and in Haines. Frank Morris has a crew of men repairing the break. , Major McAntlrews and family will leave on the steamer Humboldt for San Franicsco, where he will re ceive medical treatment.
