[ DOUGLAS. Dec. 12.?"Please go 'way and let me sleep." If conditions in Indian town on j the beach in DouRlas are half as ba 1 ; as represented by a committee of four residents of that part of the| city who appeared before the city j council last nighi, there is something! radically wrong somewhere. The i complaint was that a ganR of "poor| white trash," Mexicans and half I breeds roam around Indian town: practically all night and every night,, that they drink and carouse, that' decently disposed Indian matrons and! maids cannot step outside their' j home3 without being insulted and ?. i that respectable people in the neigh :, borhood are deprived of enjoying i the only thing that has not advancedi> in price lately, wooing Nature's sweet . restorer, balmy sleep. !] | In fact, one member of the dele-!. 'gation, a woman, informed the caun-j j cil that during her residence of: three months on the beach she had , not enjoyed a single night of undis-j turbed repose. The committee fur-j ' ther claimed that sentinels herald j I the approach of City Marshal Shafer, j when he visits that section and that11 j while he remains, everything there j ! is quiet and peaceful to such an ex-' : tent as to revive recollections of. ; Gray's elegy in a country church-1 i yard. I The coramitte further alleged that | the Federal authorities are not doing ; their duty in not ferreting out the ? ; purveyors of that which made Ken-i_ ! tucky famous, claiming that nearly i all the misconduct complained of: I comes from the illicit sale and con-j ; sumption of liquor; that the lawless i element in Indian town has become i so bold that an Indian employed at; the Treadwell mines had returned i to his home only a few days ago to find that his wife had been kid napped and several hours search was required to locate her. When found she was locked in a cabin belonging to a member of the gang. In support of their request that ' some action be taken by the coun cil to regulate the evils existing on " the beach, the committee presented ?' a petition numerously signed and calling Tor municipal protection. But the fact that the petition was signed by one man in particular whom the wharf records show to have received 250 gallons of booze recently, some what weakened the effect it would otherwise have had, the party in question not being licensed to sell Intoxicants. However, Mayor O'Con nor promised the committee that the council will take such steps as will tend to purify the social atmosphere on the beach. In support of the mayor's promise to the committee. Councilman Stub bins introduced an ordinance making it a misdemeanor for any person to be .found loitering on the streets of Douglas after 11 o'clock at night, the ordinance being similar to one now in effect at Juneau. It was read twice and will come up for fi nal passage at the next regular meet ing of the council. In case of Its violation a fine of $100 or twenty-five days in jail, or both at the discre tion of the city magistrate, Is pro vided for. Bills amounting to $195.55 were ordered paid. 4 DOUGLAS ITEMS F. A. J.
