Jan. 26.?The coffee trade has been interested lately in reports, said to emanate from offic ial Washington, that one of the measures the Democrats will adopt In an effort to wipe on the $27!),000, 000 deficiency in the treasury, pre dicted by Secretary McAdoo in 1918, will bo an import duty on coffee. The prices for coffee futures have made advances on the reports, and it is probable a real bull movement would follow the actual confirmation of the stories. But traders are rather divided in opinion as to the liklihood of a coffee duty. One broker recalled from his IS years j change no less then six occasions when talk of a duty 011 coffee hasj been an important factor without] the duty becoming a fact. On the other hand, an important operator regards an import tax on the com modity as "sure as fate." Washington reports place the' imount of the duty at Va of u cent: i pound, but in the opinion of prom ncnt traders, the levy will lie larger! -probably nearer five cents a pound. Die annual reports of coffee Into. .his country are estimated at about 5,000,000 bag3, or 1,040,000,090 pounds. V duty of % cent would therefore ?icld about $5,200,000, while a five :cnt tax would net $52,000,000. It is pointed out that a duty on ?offec could be much more easily >ornc by the general public than, i similar levy on almost any other bodstuff, sincecoflee is about the on-: y commodity that Is not selling at' var prices. A pound of coffee at 20 ents l ists the average American; amily a week, and Increases in the j :ost owing to a duty would be im lortant. American roasters, cn whom he chief burden of the tax would all, are not worried over the levy, irovided it is small, say one cent a iound, but they declare that a five ent rate would work a decided hard hip.
