The Message of the Prince of Peace (By Rev. George G. Bruce) Pastor of the Presbyterian Church "For unto ur a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the Govern ment shall be upon his shoulders; and his name shall be called won derful, Counsellor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.”—(Isa. 9: 6. What shall be the message of this Christmas time which is for the hap piest any country has ever seen? The torn fields will soon bring forth and bud; forsaken and neglected business, devastated and desolate cities will soon spring up to new ness of life; husband, father or son spared from the maelstrom of mad ness will find place and opportunity, for renewed service and song, while the future points to universal plenty and prosperity. From under the lurid horizon of war will soon dawn the day of peace. The prophet in speaking was ad CHRISTMAS SUGGESTIONS HANDKERCHIEFS* 25 Cents and Up FANCY COMBS AND BAR RETTS, 25c k. Sin was bringing down upon them the rod of correc tion, and the prophet could see the clearing beyond and tne coming rain bow of peace. In our understanding of God we are to distinguish be tween the mist of the world and the bright light of truth, between the darkness of evil and the eternal day time of righteousness. As much dif ference may be suggested, yea, vast ly more, than is in the path of the vi per, and the haven of the eagle; one crawls out its craven existence while the other is limited only by its own strength to mount into thi heavens from whence it may look down on the unhappy world beneath To Itnderstand the times let ui imagine a family poor in goods cramped in circumstances, but rich in opportunity. The father is no: so well clad as he once was, and his appearance has deprived him of the possibility of service his worth demands. The mother has saved and planned until she can make he: meagre means stretch no further One day a child comes into that home quite unlike other children it the family. As the days pass hi excels In school, in college, in busi ness. Soon his successes bring pros perity to the family, and father i: eased from drudgery and mothe from excessive anxiety. Joy come into the family "for unto us a sot is given; and the Government shal be upon his shoulders.” As the day: pass continued prosperity prevail: to all those who know this grant “son,” and in time the community changes, and his fame has taken holt of the - State. At last he become: the harbinger of peace; all men flocl to him, for he is given to all men Such was the thought of the prophe as he told the people in the darkes hour of their turbulent night, of thi "Prince of Peace" who was to comi to carry upon his own shoulders thi government of the people. He shall be called "Wonderful.' The Nations that flourished befor< the days of Jesus had every ad vantage to excel in art, in poetry in schools, in eloquence, and the; did excel. COnOBS, Proprietor tions that Jesus came into the world, and from the debris of society has he wrought a most wonderful change, and the world today under the guid ance of its men of deeds and destiny knows that only as men shall follow the teaching of Jesus shall they ever hope to abide. This is a time when the Nations must listen first to the “Counsellor." At times we forget that Nations are but men, and that they will promul gate the thoughts of men. We arc concerned whether our leaders are listening to the thoughts of the “Counsellor” that the thoughts ob tained may be the thoughts of men and nations. Outside “He has wait ed long is waiting still.” The God of war has long reigned on earth. The history of Nations is a history of v/ars. But war will see the end of its days when Jesus comes to reign on the earth, and then shall the earth be glad and the Heavens rejoice. “The Mighty God" will sup plant war by his own presence, and men will beat their instruments of war into instruments of agriculture and learn war no more. In times of war and internatnonal turmoil men are schooled in the real meaning of the “Everlasting Father.” Long have the Nations heard of the 'Fatherhood of God,” but without the realization of its meaning. In he rending of the people asunder a true conception is gained of how 'his marvelous phrase has weight and meaning, and that is the yield 'ng of the will of the people of the world to recognize Him as such. A son on earth must be born or adopt ed into the family to have standing and state, even so is it in the king dom in which Jesus and peace shal reign, men must be willing to lx born into the kingdom that the.' may claim the Fatherhood of God Once the supreme attraction of evi is placed into subjection men wil flock to the window of righteo if no and Imtice and truth And so shall the Prince of Peace come into his own one day. Bui abiding that day of his coming ii Derson the people of the earth may enjoy the spirit of full peace as they receive and appropriate the princi pies now that He will extend later As He rose in the little ship or the waters of Galilee and stopper he tossing tempest, so must he rist oday in the minds and hearts o nen and Nations to live in onr great family that they may be led b; he “son given.” One has lont claimed the supremacy of the seas; mother has harbored hate anr aught it to its sons and daughters; mother has persecuted the Israel ol God that have dwelled within he rorders and made life and living al most intolerable; another has liver yn blood and plunder so long that her glory rises to its zeinth in thi unusual opportunity to Hatiate he gory desires; another has felt tha .she alone is called to instruct th world in her manner of living am power, and if they will not listei to her logic they must listen tr “blood and iron.” These quarrels smack too much of the devil’s way. and too little of God’s praise. Na tion purporting to bear the name ol Christ follow the ways of Satan Claiming to proclaim the gospel ol good news they spread the gospel of "might is right,” and “let the devil take the hindmost.” The spirit of Christmas is to pul the Government on the shoulders of the one God has given to bear it, and let the peace that passeth knowledge floods our hearts ami lives. The zeal of the Lord of Host will help us, and accomplish whai we cannot. A Christmas Mediation (John 3:16.) (By Rev. James T. McQueen,) Pastor of the M. E. Church. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son.” There is a wonderful contrast both In the manner and the measure of God's giving and our giving. God gave the best He had to a world in rebellion against him; we give to those whom we love and who love us. Someone has said, “the greatest thing God did for man, was to love him and the greatest thing a man can do for God, is, to love one of his children. Love is the fullest and last measure of devotion and ser vice; such was the fight of God, and such was the service of the gift. His gift and service remain the greatest thing in the world today. There are special reasons for be ing glad and happy this Christmas time; the words “Peace on Earth, and good will to man,” never meant so much to us as it does at the present time. The sun always shines brightest after a severe storm; and just now, after the terrible war cloud has passed, Jesus the Son of Right eousness, stands forth in the midst of men, the champion of all that is good and pure and Just. The man of Gaililee, is thee, man of today, the inspiration of every truly good man. Those were immortal words of the Apostle Paul, in his message to the PhiUppians, when he said: "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus; who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God; but took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of man; and being found in fashion as a man, he bum bled himself and became obedient unto death,, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him and given him a name that is above every name." Take all that Is Christlike out of life and history of man, and they are soon forgotten. Men are truly great, not as they possess wealth, or learn ing, social or political position, but. only as they reproduce the life of Jesus Christ; when men give a life to the world that has the image of Christ stamped upon it, he will ren der humanity a service which will last through two worlds. God so loved his enemies and Mis Son taught this in his Gospel; now. the people of Christian America, will have the opportunity, to practice the Gospel, as well as to live it. Those who would have crushed us. will now receive bread from our hands; This was the Apostle Paul, Philosophy of Christianity—“If thine enemy hunger, 'feed him; and if he thirst, give him drink; for in so doing, thou shall heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.” The light of nature was not suf ficient to reveal the love of God to a sinful world; one was needed to rescue Man, who could take Mis place among men and share I-II3 lot with them. One was needed to inspire to the highest and noblest living and lay the foundations for the salvation of future generations. Kings and kingdoms have risen and fallen, but Jesus Christ has succeeded in establishing his kingdom in the lives of men. and the time is hastening when His kingdom of this world will become the Kingdom of Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
