Solomon Derby
Be Held April
At the last meeting of the Nome
Kennel Club, held Friday, it was
decided to revive the former “Sol
omon Derby”, dog racing classic
held here many years ago. The
course is from Nome along the
Bering Sea ice to Solomon, a dis
tance of 32 miles, and return,
making a total distance of 64
miles.
As prizes for the race is was
decided to set $500 as first prize;
$250.00 as second and $100 as the
third prize—exceptionally fine
purses for this type of race. The
date set for the classic was agreed
as April 3rd. An entrance fee of
$15 will be charged, said direc
tors of the Club.
Other dog races and winter
events aramged on schedule are
as follows:
February 12th, Lincoln’s Birth
day, a High School Burden Race.
Other races on Washington’s
irthday, Feb. 22nd, and 27th.
On March 5th, a special Men’s
Speed Race to Cape Nome and
return, the former Marathon Dog
Derby with prizes of $150, $75?
and $25. This race will take place
on the day of the big Kennel
Club Carnival, which winds up
the Queen Contest for the elec
tion of a Miss Nome to go to
Fairbanks.
The dog race schedule this year
Should attract numerous racers
from out of town and around
Seward Peninsula. The speed
race in February and the big
Solomon Derby in the early part
'of April will wind up the dog rac
ing for 1933 and will undoubted
ly attract many entrants. AH en
trants in either race should com
muniate with Secretary, Wilfred
Boucher, in Nome, for further
particulars.
A Magic Hand
To Scour The
Sea For Gold
GLASGOW, (A*)—A Dutch en
gineer and his mecihanicail “clutch
ing hand” are going after the
30,000.000 gold ducats that may
have been resting at the bottom
of Tobermory bay since the Span
ish armada.
The inventor, Herr Van Wiener,
will attempt to find the gold in
the wreckage of the galleon Du
qu ’ Florence, off the Isle o>f Mull,
early this year.
The galleon, part of the mighty
armada of Phillip of Spain, sailed
to war with Queen Elizabeth's
fleet in 1588.
When the Armada was annihil
ated. the Duque Florenca was
swept by a gal? toward the Scot
tish coast, wihere the indignant

There she has lain ever since.

A fine piece of plate in silver
and gold, daggers, scabbaTds, and
bones, a few coins and a cannon
ball have been taken from the
galleon at various times — but
never the 30 million.

HE BATTLES ILLNESS to carry on the papal duties.
Here is an exclusive Associated Press photo of Pope Pius XI, his
most recent portrait, which shows clearly the strain recent poor
health has imposed upon him. Just a year ago the pontiff was criti
cally ill, but rallied against great odds.
This Alligator
Must Rustle His
Own Eats Now
JACKSONVILLE, Florida,(JP)—
A scaly old allligatoT in a Florida
swamp south of here has a score
to settb with government inves
tigators of the federal alcohol tax
unit.
The nine foot saurian was liv
ing like a lord on fat young hogs
who became tipsy from bootleg
still mash until the tax men fin
ally wrecked his meal ticket.
The investigators saw the cagy
reptile slide into the water while
they were demolishing the still.
Nearby were the remains of sev
eral half-grown hogs.
The still wreckers said it was
obvious the alligator had been
lying around the moonshine plant
for an easy living. Hogs, they
explained, frequent bootleg stills
and as soon as a young porker
guzzled enough liquor mash to
get tipsy and wandered to the
water’s edge, it was an easy mark
for Old Mr. Gator.
