Unable to pay the fine, he was placed in the Federal] jail, here. Irvin Russell, a Kotzebue na-J tive, was released from the Fed eral jail, here, this afternoon, af ter making application for release under the Poor Convict Law. He was serving out a $500 fine im posed by U. S. Commissioner Waller Dowd of Kotzebue, after being found guilty of violating the Alaska Game Laws. Last Saturday night, the first i of the series of card socials and dances under the auspices of the Pioneers of Alaska, was attended by a large and enthusiastic turn out of Pioneers and their friends. Nearly 20 tables were found necessary to accommodate the I whist players, the winners being as follows: Ladies first prize was awarded to Mrs. L. E. Rynn ing; 2nd to Mrs. Victor Page; and consolation prize to Miss Lorene Hagen. For the men, Peter X. Peterson [ was awarded first prize; J. Bineck second prize, and Fred Johnson received the consolation prize. Fo Mo wing the card games and awarding of the beautiful prizes everyone present partook of the delicious lunch served by the Pioneers, for which they are fam ous. Next came dancing to the! music of the Hill Billies orchestra! which was enjoyed immensely, j Gus Johnson, the Pioneers’ No. 1 Chairman of the social Com mittee, announces that th. next. I game of the series will take place Feb. 14th, (St. Valentine's Day, at which time cards and lunch will be the attraction, to which, an admission charge of 50 cents will be mad . Pool from Juneau, ap proval was given for the adult knitting class. Sessions will therefore begin tonight at seven o'clock and will be held on Mon days and Thursdays thereafter for a period of twedive weeks. The same wire contained notice that the proposed bookkeeping class is not eligible for v'ocational support. This obstacle has been met and overcome by the decision of the students to carry the en tire expense of the course them selves. Instruction will begin February 14 and meetings are scheduled twice a week. The proposed meeting for tonight has been canceled. The public is again reminded that the Nome Public School stands ready to establish any vo cational courses for which there is popular support. Some pro posed classes are weaving and dressmaking for the women and deisel engineering for the men.] A course in woodworking has! proved popular in many commun ities also.
