Bill Predicted to Plug
Hole in Security
WASHINGTON UPi—Sen. Mundt
<R-SD> predicted Thursday swift
approval by Congress of a bill to
plug what he termed “the great
hole shot into our internal secur
ity” by the Supreme Court.
Mundt and Sens. Eastland and
McCarthy introduced yesterday '
similar bills designed to negate 1
the court’s 6-3 ruling on Monday 1
that the government may not sum- 1
marily dismiss on grounds of se
curity workers whose jobs do not J
directly concern national security, y
Another Republican, former Sen.
Cain of Washington State, agreed
in a separate interview that the
Supreme Court “did shoot a hole” | \
in the loyalty-security program, j
but said it was “right where it ,
should be shot.” }
Cain, appointed by President ]
Eisenhower to the Subversive Ac
tivities Control Board <SACB), \
has become a vigorous critic of 1
the security program. 1
At the end of two days of testi- j
mony before a Senate Judiciary
subcommittee Wednesday, one ,
man Cain cited was re-offered a
job he had lost on grounds of se
curity. And Sen. Hennings (D-Mo)
said the subcommittee he heads
will explore other cases which
Cain described as injustices or at
least questionable.
Cain on Tuesday had termed an
example of "fascism” the case of
an ex-GI who had lost an Ameri
can Red Cross job after the Army
raised security questions against
him.
Wednesday night the Defense
Department announced the Red
Cross has offered to rehire the
man, Irving August of Seattle, a
World War II and Korean veteran.
•Til be delighted to go back to j
work,” August said Seattle. He j
attributed his troubles to what he ,
said was brief membership in the
Fiogressive Party in IMS. He said ,
he dropped out because he felt “it1

of the State Department’s German
Affairs Section.
Adenauer left immediately af
terward for Washington’s Nation
al Airport to fly to New York City
to continue his unofficial U.S.
visit.
It was Eisenhower’s first meet
ing with anybody outside of his
personal and official families and
medical personnel since his opera
tion for an abdominal obstruction
last Saturday.
The brief session followed what
the doctors reported as Eisen
hower’s best night since he under
went surgery.
Adenauer spoke in German and
Kellerman translated.
Dulles said Eisenhower “per
sonally brought up” the question
of German reunification.
“It was a very good talk,” said
Dulles. “The President expressed
not only the sentiments that he
feels toward the Chancellor and
! that the American people feel to
ward the German people, but he
expressed the hope that action
would soon be taken to liberate
the 17 million Germans now in
the eastern zone of Germany.

Drunkeness Increases
200% in Sweden; One
Person in 10 Soused '
STOCKHOLM, UP>—Sweden’s
police force has figured out you’re
not drunk until you fall flat and
lie prone. Staggers don’t count.
Otherwise, the police said yes
terday, there aren’t enough clinks
to house all the eligibles.
The government decided it was
time to take sounding since liquor
rationing ended in Stockholm last
October. It came up with the
startling fact drunkeness has in
creased by 200 percent.
What the figures really boil
down to is this: take a good look
at the next 10 people who pass
before your eyes in Stockholm:
one of them is loaded.
Statistician Bertil Hellgren of
the government figuring office
calls the situation “catastrophic”
and said there’s no telling how
far it will go. He said the men re
sponsible for figuring got in touch
with the Stockholm police when it
looked like their figures were get
ting out of hand and were told:
“We take only those lying flat
now.” The police went on to re
port they simply don’t have suffi
cient men to take in tow all the
characters wandering around in
various stages of inebriation.
