The Alaskan introduced the measure last year to dissolve the Tongass National Forest fund which was set up in 1947 to hold receipts from forest sales in es crow pending settlement of Indian claims to the southeast Alaska forest area. He later asked the committee to hold up action when Sen. Jack son, acting at the request of Alas ka’s Gov. B. Frank Heintzleman, introduced a less inclusive bill. Bartlett told the committee he first proposed dissolution of the Tongass fund in the belief that, if the courts subsequently uphold Indian claims, Congress will make direct appropriations to pay off the award. He said he still believes that to be the case, but that it couldn’t be explained to the Indians. “I’d rather see the territory as sume a liability than to bewilder our Indian citizens,” he declared. The committee is still trying *to figure it out. IN COMMISSIONER'S COURT Bert Tocktoo, a minor, was fined $50 for soliciting liquor.
