*1. •* ' "<*• •* »I""' » H do Aloskons wont to build a WILDERNESS CAPITAL? Here Are the Facts About Initiative No. 1 A Proposal to Move the Location of Alaska's State Capital YOU WILL VOTE on a proposal to set up a new capital city in West ward Alaska, on a tract of not less than 6400 acres of State land, at a location 30 miles or more from Anchorage—the move must be started not later than June 1, 1968. It is important that you know what this means before you go to the polls election day. A Wilderness Capital The requirements of 6400 acres of State land and not less than 30 miles ’ from Anchorage, when applied to specific lands, make the nearest available location 60 miles from Anchorage. This means a wilderness location—starting from scratch—clearing land—new access roads—streets — sewers — water and power systems —capital buildings —airport — housing. Cost-4150,000,mo Careful estimates show that construction of a new city in the wilder ness would cost Alaska over $150,000,000. No limit is set in the Ini tiative measure on how much can be spent. You are being asked to approve a blank check. You Will Suffer The people of Alaska will have to pay the bill for moving the capital. This means people all over Alaska, including the villages, will have to do without many pressing needs. You Have a Choice Do the small communities and villages of Alaska want schools or a new capital? Airports or a new capital? Bridges and roads or a new capital? Hospitals or a new capital? The State Department of Planning estimates that $390,000,000 is needed in the next six years to build schools, airports, bridges, roads and other public improvements throughout Alaska. 60% of the money can come from the federal government . . . but the remaining $144, 000,000 must come from Alaska. A good share of this money will go to help develop the small communi ties and villages of Alaska ... IF ... the money is available. BUT . . . It Will NOT Be Available If You Vote for a Wilderness Capital Let's Build Alaska-Don't Destroy It! Vote Against Initiative No. 1 FAIRBANKSANS UNITED Edmund A. Hinke, Chairman P.S.
