Opening of t he Second Week of t he Term. 1 lie opening ot the second week is tuost gratify inc- to the officers and man Sgors, About fourteen teachers were added to the roll of last week. All mem bers of the faculty appear fresh and vig orous. Every thing point3 to another most excellent week's work. The coun ty superintendent who is secretary of the Normal says that he was highly rejoiced last Friday evening to hear Dr. Shepherd say that the itudents of the Asheville Normal are tae most appreciative and capable body ' f teachers that it hns jeen his pleasure t meet in the State. We are always pi nd of the people of Wes tern North Crrolina. We take eoecial pride in recording to the credit t our teachers (most of whom are teachers of country public schools) the high com mendation of this scholarly gentleman. In the Normal last week Dr. Shepherd outlined concisely the work of his de partment, tin English Language and Literature, v th History. He assured the teachers t .at his earnest wish was to render them a.l possible aid, and express ed the hope that they would not regard him or treat him as a stranger. He then proceeded to explain some of the fund amental laws of teaching, dwelling especially upon co-ordination and its practical value to tne student, as wen as the instructor. He emphasized the fact that it is not he end of skilful or scientfic teaching to .rhauBt a topic, but so to present it, a- to create an interest, to stimulate m ital activity, and not to alul .nra ta if f . an fii on artoni. a a n war. tax the energy of the pupil. He then explained tl's relation of literature to history, sho eing how admirably they interpret anc elucidate each other. Tennyson's "Dreams of Fair Women" was cited in illustration of this general proposition, ai d the historical allusions contained in it were pointed out, such for instance, as the touching reference to Sir Thomas M ore's daughter and to Joan of Arc. The foundation of the English coloi'ies in America was also discussed.especially the splendidachieve ments of Sir Walter Raleigh, to whose inspiration the supremacy of the Eng lish language and race, in America, is principally to be attributed. The char acter of the Elizabethan era was aleo considered, and it was shown that the establishment of the English language upon this continent began at a time coincident with the most brilliant developments of that language, the age of Spencer, Sir Phillip Sidney, Sir Francis Bacon, Ben Jonson, Shakespeare and a goodly company of others Who filled "the spacious time of great Elizabeth With sounds that echo still." Spenser's Fairy Queen was also cited as a conspicuous example of an historic poem, one in which the inner conscious ness of a great epoch is portrayed with consummate artistic skill and grace.
