THE CONGRESSIONAL) CANVASS In tbe Ninth District The PeopU Thoroughly Alfre, and Anxious to Hear About Tariff Reform. Messrs. Eug. D. Carter, demor cratic representative of Congress man Thos. D. Ewart, republican candidate for Congress, from this district, did not speak at Mars Hill, Madison county,' yesterdaj', as they were advertised to do, on account of tlie sickness i the latter gentleman. On Monday they spoke to a large crowd of peo ple, mostly republican.-1, at Mar shall, and torday they expect to speak to the people of Yancey, at Cane River. We have been greeted by large crowds, generally, at every ap pointment, and the people have seemed much intereiteU iu what we have had to say to them. They want to hear th tariff explained, and deprecate any reference to the old things that have been used by campaign speakers heretofore. We rarely if ever, reler to those matters, and devote our remarks entirely to the methods and effects of tariff' re form. We have tried, and I think successfully, to m4ke a dignified, gentlemanly canvass, uud the people seem to like our stylo of campaign-. ine. I found almost everywhere that the people are fully alive and interested in the real issues of the campaign, and I . regard our pros pects for a democratic victory in November as being very bright. Taken altogetherwe have had a very pleasant joint canvass, and it will continue so until the end." Messrs. Citrter and Ewart will speak at Burnsville to-morrow, and wili aUo fill every appointment made in the new list. Mr. (Jurter is i. strong, eloquent and forcible speaker, and the democracy need have no fear about its claima steiog fairly presented, and its honor vin dicated on eyery stump in the Ninth Congressional district, by th;s gentleman. Gentlemen's underwear a full assort ment at Whitlook's.' ' GORTON'S MINSTRELS. The Entertainment Folly Up to Ex " ; - ' pectations. The "players" had ever reasoa to be satisfied with their greeting Mon day night, the Opera Hall being more crowded than we ever seen it. Tbe audience had equal" reason to be pleased, the entertainment being fully equal to the expectations raised by the advance announcements. In truth, in its special features it w&s perfect. Never have we heard more delicious, music from wind instru ments, so soft and subdued, though clear and distinct, and falling gently upou the ear as seolian strains, The instrumental music of itself would emphasize the claims of the troupe to the higbest.eonsideration. Ia regard tt the other features of the perform enet, the unbounded delight of the large audience is sofficient testimony. Everything was perfect in its kind, the dancing, the interlocutory play of wit, the soDgs, by voices of unusual excellence, all combined to give as an entertainment perfect ef its kind. With regard to th Minstrel fea tures, we might say trlN negro nsiu trelsy is presented" new a days on an entirely new phase. It is no longer the reproduction of plantation negro characteristics. In the early days of that kind of niinistrelsy, the stage celiverator from the plantations He caught his ideas of fun and mirth, of sentiment and pathos, of music and aboriginal art, from the untutored and unsophisticated negro, rich in the traditional and peculiar melodies of his own country, improvising with untutored abandon incidents sug gested by his secluded surroundings, perhaps inspired by dim reflections on his enslaved condition, giving them uttcranoe to the accompani ment of the banjo, the unscientific yet effective device of the nnartistic musician, and expressing them in harmonious, wild and unscintiflc per haps, but animated, and often plain tive and touching in the extreme. Such wa3 the music of "Lucv Nea'," "Long time Ago," '-On the Banks of Swannanoa River," and others, so pleasing, and responding so perfectly to a common human feeling, as to have been adopted after the reform ing touch of the cultivated musician, as vehicles for the most delicate po etic sentiments, and becoming the favorite airs of the high and low throughout the world. But that source ef negro minstrelsy has gone forever. The negrc in his freedom, looks back perhaps with loathing to that which provi led the re creation of the slave. His love of music remains, but it runs into other chart-. neis7 ' i he simplicity of character is lost; politics, the church, often the pressures f necessity, the new as soeiate of liberty, destroy the orig inal light nsartedness and the song beoomes a burden, instead of a cheer Old negro minstrelsy is at end; and its successor, as a reflection of the negro peculiarities becomes a travesty; better music, finer singing, sharper wit perhaps ; but the natural, grotesque, humorous, rediculous negro is not there ; and he never will appear on the stage again. Last week, by invitation, Dr. C. D. Smith, ot Macon, member of the State Board of Agriculture, for the 9th Congressional District, addressed the French Broad- Farmers Club at Alexanders on the general interests of agricult ure. Deeming those subjects closely involved with some of the political questions of the day, he incorporated in his address the following remarks and illustra tions to show the closeness of that connection, and the reasons why farmers should give close heed to the conduct of political move ments. -. -, .' 1 " -JVe quote the following : : "It is said that the West has grown that farmers have multi plied, and that we have the rich, est nation on the globe. The West is referred to as an example of expansion in this great national wealth and multiplication of farms and farm products. All this is at tributed by the advocates of high protection to the present protec tive system. Let us analyze this question a question in which every man,, woman and child who owns in any way a foot of land is interested. First then as to farms. In 1880, in seven western States there were an aggregate of farms making a total of 1,309,100. Ke cent statistics, collected by Gran ger associations, and printed in the farm journals of those States make the following exhibit of farm mortgages in the same seven States : Kansas, $ 235,000,000 Illinois, 1,000,000,000 Indiana, 635,000,000 Ohio, . 1,237,000,000 Iowa. 567,000,000 Michigan, 500,000,000 Wisconsin, 357,000,000 Total indebtedness, 4,521,000,000 Tho vast aggregate of farm mortgages, when divided between 1,309,100, make an average mort gusre of $3,400 upon every farm in these seven States. Bear it in mind that these are not crop mortgages, but upon the farms themselves. Now let us aee the assessed valuation of the reality in these same States in 1885. Kansas, t 275,000,000 Illinois, 797,000,000 Indiana, 793,000,000 Ohio, 1,671,000,000 Iowa, 625,000,000 Michigan, 850,00000 Wisconsin, 4WT,vw,mu Total, 5,507,000,000 Th ratio of mortgage indebted ness as shown by these figures is about four fifths, or 80 per cent of the assessed valuation. It was developed in this investigation by the western grangers that the reat bulk of this mortgage in ebtedness is owned in the indus trial that is the manufacturing States. It is a result of protec tion, etc., etc. There were 27,000 miles of rail road in 1885. These have a nom inal value of $2,527,000,000, and yield an annu al net earning o $57,520,000. Now of this stock and bond valuation of these roads only 5 per cent is owned in the States in which these roads are located the other 95 per cent owned mostly the industrial States. . The final summing up of this mort gage indebtedness an railroad net earnings togethei with the amount of tariff taxation upon these seven States make up an aggregate sum of $477,000,000 drawn annually from them. These figures show that the apparent prosperity of Jthe West is ficti- r-ions. and that it is oniv a Ques tion-of time with the people of those States when they .will be held in bondage as mexhora- ble as any bondage ever exer cised bv feudal lords over their retainers. White men think of this slavery. Our District Electors. .. Only the very be.-t reports come to us of the really able and effective canvass now being made in this dis trict by Hon. W. T. Crawford, demo cratic elector for this district Mr, C. has proven himself to be one of the best debators and speakers ia this section and at every plaoe has downed his wily opponent Mai. Re hns.
