POETICAL. Three Words of Strength. There are three lessons I would write Three words, as with a burning pen, In tracing of eternal light, Upon the hearts of men. Have IIojMiJ Though clouds environ round And gjadness hides her face in scorn, Put thou the shadow from thy brow No night but hath its morn. Have Faith ! Where'er thy bark is driven, The calm's disport, the tempest's mirth, Know this : (Joel rules the hosts of Heaven, The inhabitants of earth. Have Love! Not love alone for one, IJut man as man thy brother call, And .scatter, like the circling sun, Thy charities on all. Thus grave these lessons on thy soul Hope, Faith and Love and thou shalt find, Strength when life's surges rudest roll, L'ght, when thou else wert blind. AGRICULTURAL. To Renovate Old Farms. In reply to the important inquiry as to how an exhausted farm can be renovated, the Ploughman makes the following sugges tions : This important object can be accomplished chiefly by grass, by farm-yard manure, and by allowing the land to rest. JNIany a farm ha been impoverished by a long succession of exhausting crops that no longer return the owner enough to pay for their cultivation. Such farms can generally be restored to their .original fertility by a correct system of man agement in a few seasons. It will be found that, of a general rule, they are too wet and that they have been ploughed shallow, the owners skimming over too many acres instead of going deep to cultivate a few acres well, and get the largest return that they are capable of yielding. In some cases, again, the crops instead of being consumed on the farm itself, to keep it in good heart, hav e been carried upon ad joining farms or sold to go to still greater distances. The selling of hay or other for age crops is sure to lead to a speedy exhaus tion. The first .thing is to find out where the leak has been and put a stop to it. If crops have been sold, make arrangements to con sume them on the farm. If the surface has been skimmed over, begin by putting down J be- plough, and do it gradually, not expect ing to accomplish the object all at once. " Now the first practical step in renovating an impoverished soil is to drain the low places, arid if need be go into a system of thorough drainage, by cutting ditches over jtho whole farm. These will lengthen out the grow ing season. Wet land that is well drained, will not require half the manure to produce large crops as land that is undrain yd. In most cases thoroughly drained land will yield twice as much ifrass or any kind of gram, and that, too, without any, or with very little manure, as the same land undrain ed will with manuring. This is then, the first step towards a complete renovation. All the manure i:i creation will not produce a larjje crop on a soil that is water-soaked and in a condition to roll up like putty when ploughed. Such soil wants the air let into it by taking the water out. It is sodden, cold, unproductive. The jjenial sunshine c innot wake it to life. Drain it, then, and do it as a requisite preliminary in the course of renovation. B. Query's Subsoil Plow, Patented July, 1870. This Plow is presented to the public in view of benefitting farming. No one after trying it can sav it is merely a sc heme for making money, but one of great usefulness; then fore I do not hesitate to re commend it to farmers as one of the best and cheap est subsoilers ever in use. Any one disposed to doubt it, can try it and satisfy themselves. The lcst of farmers that have s-cn it in operation can testify to the alove. It will turn 4 inches of top soil and loosen G inches of the subsoil Avith less power than you can turn 8 inches in Lhe old way, and will suit both land and crop better. It preA-ents the land from baking, and mixes less of the top soil with the subsoil. Any man that understands farm ing can soon discern its merits. It will plow the grass and weeds away from the crop and throw the clean dirt back to it at the same time, which you Avill readily perceive saA-es labor, and that is one great object. It can be used to great advanta-'e in ploAving wet land. . For seeding small grain it will cover the seed from two to four inches and loosen the soil four or five inches below thestel. As for preparing land for Cover and Grasses, it has no equal. A cotton or com planter may be readily attached, as also a fertilizer distributor. I propose selling County or Stata Rights for the use of this Subsoih-r on reasonable terms. Any one wishing to test the PIoav before the Right is procur ed can apply to me. The Plow can be seen at Cook & Ellyson's Agri cultural Works in Charlotte, and at Ilarrisburg Depot and Concord, K. C. . , ELAM M. QUERY, lkirrisburg Depot, Cabarrus county, N. C.
