AGRICULTURAL. The Oat Crop. The irfscnt -and .prosp'.'etivc price of cotton is welt 'calculated to produce reflection on the part of those planters who have blindly staked everything on the cotton crop. They have their fertilizers to pay for, and most of them a heavy bill for provisions to loot. Have they pursued a true agricultu ral economy? HI they repeat during the next year, the error of the past ? Many no ilonbt will, but many others will seek to diversify their agriculture. A good begin ning in this course of repentance will be the sowing of a good breadth of land in oats. Many have already taken this wise precau tion. We advise those who have not done o to make the necessary arrangements for flowing in February. Take an old piece 4of com ground, chop down the stalks and bum them. Broadcast cotton need, taking care to put the greatest amount on the poor Vst Kpots, so as to .produce a crop as nearly uniform in quality as may be practicable, lireak up the land, and then sow good heavy oats -at the rate of one bushel per acre. Harrow these in. If the land is cloddy the roller should be used to break up and pul verize the clods. A four feet section of a round tree about 18 inches in diameter with Yohfid iron Kpikes driven in at the centre of each end lor an axle, will answer very well for u roller. Carolina Juiruur. January Thoughts. With this month begins -the Xew Year of 'our times. It is named from the Uoman diety Janus, which means, look behind and before. The lioman Year originally began in March, but in the time of Xurna l'om .philia B. 0. G72, there were two months, January and February added to the year; making the beginning, instead of March, January. This month should be spent the most part in reflection looking behind and before. We make no apology for our frequent re ference to the social elements of the house hold, for on the 'proper appreciation of these, depends the good of the garden and yank Look back. What has been our expenses and our income for the last year. For this year our expenses must be reduced if they were larger than our income last. To be strictly honest, this calculation must be made. We must spend less or no more than we make. Have we accounts or obligations that were to be met at the end of the year? If so, see after them. Have we a borrowed hook or umbrella in our possession-? If so, return it. With us it is expected that we -all settle accounts at the end of the year. If we fail in the least of these things, in the meeting of an obligation implied or express ed, we violate the whole vow. "Fay thy 'debts." The difference in any case being in the degree of embarrassment, it gives to the -man to whom the debt is due. The man who cares tor the law, is careful alike about every obligation. Look before. There is a vast future, a 'road to travel, a sea to navigate, a new work to do. It needs that we think well on it, both as to how it shall be with us and our fellows. Has the past been for prolit to us :and tolhcrn? If so, wherein ? If not, how? Let it in no wise happen, that our iniquities shall fall on our children or our friends. It inUy be in this wise, if we be not thoughtful of very right for it has in the past happened so, that we may buy, hoping to pay, and ex pecting to, but it so turns that our hopes are lbla)ited, our speculations fail and our obliga- Hihiis can't be met by us, ami have to be met by some kind friend who has gone surety for us ami who has taken all the risk, with out the least expectation of gain. While Ve in many cases, all expectation of gain :aud nothing to loose. In the future ask of no man such a favor. Let us plant for a bad crop, and then do Vmr best to make a good one. In entering on the new year, let us so set out, us far as in us lies, that if we go down on the way, the family and friends left be hind shall not be tin1 worse that we lived, and that we he ready to take up the journey in another and better world. Let us live rather as to our own duty and 'means than as to the course of our neighbor. Be careful alike to work the six days and rest the seventh. kJut doors we can't do much. Continue fpruiiing and transplanting trees, anil vines, making compost and draining. We may 'plant beans, radish, asparagus, garden peas, cabbage, beets, onions, lettuce. We may, by planting thus early, have an burlier crop. Our people usually do their 'planting of this season between the Christ mases. l:.con$trwti'd lutt'mtr. Edgeworth Fomale Seminary. Inve terate cases of Scrofulous dis ease where the system seemed j saturated with corruption, have been purified and cured by it. Scrofulous affections and disorders, which were ag gravated by the scrofulous contamination until they were painfully afflicted, have been radically cured in such great numbers in almost every si ction of the country, that the public scarcely iK'ed t be informed of its virtues of uses. Scrofulous poi ion is one of tin most destructive enemies of our race. Often, this unseen and unfelt tenant of the organism undermines the constitution, invites the attack of enfeebling or fa till diseases, without exciting a suspicion of its presence. Again, it seems to breed infection throughout the body, and then, on some favorable occasion, rapidly developed into one or other of its hideous forms, either on the surface or among the vitals. In the later, tubercles may le suddenly deposited in the lungs or heart, or tumors formed in the liver, or it shows its presence ! by eruptions on the skin, or foul ulcerations on i some part of the bodv. Hence the occasional use i of a bottle of this SARSAPARILLA is advisable, : even when no active symptoms of disease appear. , Persons afflicted with the following complaint gen- ; erally find immediate relief, and, at lenth, cure, bv j the use of this SARPARILLA : St Anthony's Fire, ' Rose or Erysipelas, Tetter, Salt Rheum, Scafd Head, ! Ringworm, Sore Eyes, Sore Ears, and other erup- ; tious or visible forms of Scrofulous disease. Also i in the more concealed forms, as Dyspepsia, Dropsy, i ; Heart disease, Fits, Epilepsy, Neuralgia, and the j ; various Ulcerous a lit ct ions of the muscular and ner- vous systems. j ! Syphilis or Venereal and Mercurial Diseases are j , cured by it, though a long time is required for sub- i ; dueing these obstinate maladies by any medicine, j But long continued use of this medicine will cure j the complaint. Leucorrhna or Whites, Uterine ! Ulcerations, and Female Diseases, are cow m only ' soon relieved and untimately cured by its purifying 1 ; and invigorating effect. Minute Directions" for j i each csiM are given in our Almanac, supplied gratis, j Rheumatism and Gout, when caused by aceiimuia- , ; tious of extraneous matters in the blood," yUdd quick- , ! ly to it, as also Liver Complaints, Torpidity, Con- I I gestioii or Inflammation cf the liver, and Jaundice, ; when arising, as they often do, from the rankliair poisions in the blood.
