ke (Shaviolie cmocral, (Bhavtolte, 1-- AGRICULTURAL. Pruning Grape-Vines. As the grape is now one of the ruling horticultural topics of the times, a lew brief notes on pruning may at this time be inter esting. A'ou miht as well prescribe one kind of medicine for all diseases, as to lay down a fixed rule upon paper for the prun ing of vines, as is loo common in our books aud papers represented. While some yield their best results by pruning back upon old wood, others do bent where the long new cane?, with several eyes lelt on every strong lateral, will give the finest fruit. ' rI -can -grow larger branches on Concord laterals than can possibly be done on the : ' mm i i t main canes. This I observed some years j since, and called the attention of some hor ticultural brethren to it. After pruning it a year or more, I was just about making it public through the press, when Mr. IIuss iiian's work ou the vine came out, wherein the same thing was named. The question then is, which kinds are to be treated this or that way ? To this I can ouly say that experience alone must be a guide in diiieient soils and climates. But n far as our observation has extended, we j will name. I can do no better than quote 1 in part from the November number of the (irape Cuiturist, by the editor: Concord, Cunningham, (Joethe, Hartford, Ilerbemont, Ives, Louisiana, Alartha, Alaxa tawney, Vlary Ann, North Carolina Seed ling, Telegraph, etc., will bear fruit best on laterals of last summer's growth, provided the main shoots were pinched at the proper time t?p as to make the Literals strong. Another class produces best on old bearing arms or canes, whose side shoots arc spurred back. Clinton, Cy nthiann, Herman, Huntington, Norton's Virginia, ami Taylor, are of this H'.lass; while a third class, such as Alvey, Cassady, Crevciing, Catawba, Delaware, Ionaand Rebecca, will produce best on short canes of live to eight eyes, and the old re newal plan will be as good as any for them. As to the time of pruning, I never found any difference, from the time the leaves fall until near spring, when budding may be .expected. It should never be done, however, when the wood is frozen; and always cut an inch above the, last eye, or it is liable to fail. Kor years I have advocated a new kind of pruning, which vintners seem very slow to adopt. It is simply to prune the bunches also; that is to leave but two (the best of course) where three or four usually set. Br this plan you will have an equal weight of fruit and much liner. Sundry Suggestions. Though inclination prompts me to keep a. close retirement, ami learn of those better versed in that which constitutes true agri cultural development, there are some mat ters which I regard of special importance, and I desire to promote their discussion. 1. Fences. Cannot this burdensome tax he lifted from us? TVith such labor as we Jiave present to rely upon how many planters could afford to replace every fence pn his place, prov ided some misfortune were to deprive him of them? Accurate calcu lations state that, on an average, this is done every ten years. This brings us, .iheu, to the consideration of the remedies, viz : Hedges. I regard this question as of vital interest, and every one posted should give his experience, stating facts as to merits ami demerits of those experimented with. $tqck laws arc now the prevailing laws regulating this branch of agriculture in Europe. And, judging from the material prosperity of its people, quantity of stock raised and sold in market, it would bespeak foe it very grave consideration. With the best timber of our forests in Northern markets, turpentine in increasing demand, and Cuffee fond of rail fires, surely it would seem time for "thus far and no farther." Though moderately successful, I have con cluded that hog-raising is unprofitable. Kvery one will see the advantage of keep ing a few "m si'ht ' these well attended to for family requirements. The desideratum a hog that will fatten at any age. With more attention to and better care of well selected cattle and sheep, "hog and hominy" will, in a great measure, be supplanted by a diet more suitable to our climate. Establishments for manufacture of agri cultural tools and implements are sadly needed every where. Having lost a number of hogs from dis ease, examined one, and found a bloody en largement on thorax. Others had bloody water accumulated in the chest. A table is poo nful of turpentine or kerosene, or lump of tar, seemed to give relief. Oct. lu, 1871. A Learxku. Southern Agriculture. Tho Commissioner of Agriculture in his report accompanying tlie Presidents mcs age, in speaking of the needs of Sourthern Agriculture, says it must le conceded that the course of agriculture in the Southern State has not been cemlucted with that I care and skill ami regard for the ultimate results which have characterized the opera- j tions oi farmers in other States, while their i lands is continuously devoted to cotton and J tobaceC until they have arrived at a state ! of exhaustion. Those of the North are con tinually improving Uy rotation of crops which is absolutely" essential to the life of the soil itself, and without which, farming ami planting had bettor be abandoned. These impressions have induced me to turn my attention to these States, to seek some mode by which the influence ol this depart ment may be directed to benelit them to find out whether their implements and es jK'cially their seeds, may not be greatlv im proved and how the distribution of seeds and plants' may best reach those to whom they may be proutably sent. iveieri ing ui ine tusi i louiion oi seeus me commissioners says : "1 am satisfied that the rnode heretofore pursued is erroneous and the quantity sent is entirely too small for even an exerijnent. A pint or a quart of wheat, oats or other cereal cannot o fup cessfully grown, and such experiments al most uniformly fail because the quantity is too small. I need not here discuss tho reasons for this. lut the result is majiifcst to those who liave tried the experiment. .1 W far Let tor to ,,ut a half or a It won I whole bushel of set d into the hands of oik conscientious and careful person than to di-! If any lady desires an excuse for dressing vide the same quantity among ten or twen- j economically and tastefully, without appear ty. I ing to a follower to be staggering along un ite savs that the Southern States suffer i der a load like a beast of burden, we are greatly in their interests for want of grasses j in the use of which their production auctions would ! be greatly iucreased by rendering a rota tion of crops necessary. Clover, with its deep roots, and rye grass, a strong grower, will well endure the hot sun of the South. LAND SALE. Ayer's Cherry Pectoral, For Disease of the Throat ami I'tnas, such as CovgTis, Colds, Whoojuiuj Cough, Bronchitis, Asthma, and Coiuinpion. Probably never before in the whole history of medicine, has anything won so widly and so deep ly upon the confidence of mankind, as this excel lent remedy for pulmonary complaints. Through a long series of years, and among most of the races of men it has risen higher and higher in their esti mation, as it has become better known. Its uni form character and power to cure the various af fections of the lungs and throat, have made it known as a reliable protector against them. While adapted to milder forms of disease and to young children, it is at the same time the most effectual remedy that can be given for incipient consumption, and the dangerous affections of the throat and lungs. As a provision against sudden attacks of Croup, it should be kept on hand in every family, and indeed as all are sometimes subject to colds and coughs, all should be provided with this antidote for them. Singers and Public Speakers find great protection from it. Asthma is always relieved and often wholly cured by it. Bronchistis is generally cured by taking the Cherry Pectoral in small and frequent doses. So generally are its virtues known that we need not publish the certificates of them here, or do j more than assure the public that its qualities are j fully maintained. Ayer's Ague Cure, For Freer and Agne, Intermittent F rer, Chill Ferer, I Remittent Ferer, Dumb Ague, Pcrvulkal or Bilious Ftter, cr., and indeed all the affections which arise f ront ma-.arioux, rtvirs't, or muuoiattc pontm. As its name implies, it does Lure, and does not ; fail. Containing neither Arsnic, Quinine, Bismuth, I Zinc, nor any other mineral or poisonous substance ' whatever, it in nowise injures any patient. The number and importance of its cures in the ngu districts, are literally beyond account, and we be lieve without a parallel in the history of Ague medi cine.
