xlvc (Eharloiit? moerai, Kat-ioiie, 3t. ' ' . , ... ., ... .-. "' ' ;J ' ' . AGRICULTURAL. Work in May. j This month is one in which the farmer : must not be remiss in active labor, for it' he fails to keep the cultivation of the crop up in "ood order, he will nine limes out often faifin a good crop, except he afterwards t ails to Iiis assistance move laborers than is abso-' lutely necessary. How a eomuioii-sene planter can Mle away single day in j May and June is astonishingly, when me work to be done to produce a heavy crop must be chiefly done in these months in this latitude. Fanners should recollect the time of harvesting the small grain conies off im mediately in crop time and that in order to harvest well, ami the corn and cotton not suffer from want of the plow and hoe, they should work early and late. Let each planter determine to do hi whole j duty and it will not go iiall" so hard as if i they have a desire to spend a portion ot ; each week in some idle gossip. The planter ! who has two mills, one to work and the j other to idle, is a sorry man at best. e , oftimes hear it said it rains more at my houe ' than at mv neighbor's, or it rains 'less. While this may be true at times it is sehlom so, for the fault lies in the man more than the seasons. Men are oftimes heard to say, "I work harder than my neighbor, but from some cause he keeps his crop in better order and gets on better generally than I do." This is easily accounted for, and it is strange to think the bad managing neighbor has not found out that there is some thought and system to be had on the farm as well as work. All of you woi ked-to-death-tnen study this .catechism: Are your lands drained V Have you a good team and comfortable quarters for them? Do you have your lands well pulverized? Do you plant at the pro per time? Do you wait for the grass and Weeds to come before you start the. plows; or do you plow to keep them from coming? When a young man we were riding over J. "P. Jenkins' farm in company with him, and, though the farm was a large one, we are confident we did not see one cart load of - weeds and grass in the farm including ditch banks and fence jams. We inquired of him how it was he had no grass anywhere. The answer was "I plow to keep the grass and weeds from coming, by which means I produce a better crop ami work less." This made an impression on our m'nds for good, as we came home a better firmer than jaion:.T7ttrdoro Reconstructed Farmer. Kill Gras3 all the Summer and Euy Hay. If there is auvthiug more unreasonable and profitless in the farmer than to toil hard ;to keep the grass out of the farm and then purchase the same article- that is produced hundreds of miles off, we are at a loss to know what it is. ISe it believed or not, it is true, the planter who practices this, though he may produce heavy crops of cot ton, he cannot prosper. You may raise as much grass as you choose by breaking up and harrowing off any good Jamls that you may have, either high or low, in the cotton regions. Rich low lands are more certain, it is true, and will yield more. 'One acre of good land thus prepared, the last of this month or in June, will yield two tons of crab grass. After the oat crop is harvested you may break and level the land and by the use of a mower you can in one week with a few hands save more on hay at $1 per 100 pounds than anything else, Just think of this, imagine the nonsensical notion that pervades the cotton planter who de pends upon ootton to supply even the ration to his mules in hay in addition to raiment to his family. Yfu favor no sumptuary law, but undoubtedly if there was a law to take effect in 1873, taxing grass 1 per 100 lbs. that is imported into the State, it would be a source of profit to the national interests of jcottondom. Reconstructed Farmer. Lime oe Peach Trees. $Ir Bailey, of El Paso, III., writes to the Western Rural that the application of lime to peach trees is a successful method of treatment: "I saw recently an article on lime being injurious to peach trees. I will here state an experiment tried by myself on trees last Spring. In our garden there- were six trees. II lev nil bloomed and looked well. The fruit set nice, but on some the leaves did not start. I thought there was something wrong; on examination the borer was there. I trimmed off' the bark, found the insect as described in the paper; took air-slacked lime and put it all around the stem; then put back the dirt. The 1 came out and the trees looked well, put lime died.1' , 4 - - leaves The lulu t peaches got ripe. Tho se wn ere 1 Why no Animals need Salt, Prof. James II. L. II. LO G. April 8, 1872. Clear and Harmless as Water. NATTANS' Crystal Discovery for the Hair. Arthur JS'attam, Interior and Proprietor, Wa7dng ' ton, IX C. A perfectly clear preparation in one bottle, as easily applied as water, for restoring Gray Hair to its natural color and youthful appearance, to eradi cate and prevent dandruff, to promote the growth of the Hair and atop its falling out. It is entirely harm less and perfectly free from any poisonous substance, and will therefore take the place of all the dirty and unpleasant preparations now in use. Numerous testimonials have been sent us from many of our most prominent citizens. In everything in which the articles now in use are objectionable, Crystal Discovery is perfect. It is warranted to contain neither Sugar of Lea l, Sulphur or Nitrate of Silver, it does not soil the clothes or scalp, is agreeably per fumed and makes one of the best dressings for the Hair in use. It restores the color of the Hair "more perfect and uniformly than any other preparation," and always does so in from three to ten days, vir tually feeding the roots of the Hair with 'all the nourishing qualities necessary to its growth and healthy condition; it restores" the decayed and in duces a new growth of the Hair more positively than anything else. The application of this wonder ful discovery also produces a pleasant and cooling effect on the scalp and gives the Hair a pleasing ap pearance. We call special attention to the fact that alimited number of small trinl bottles can be had by those wishing to try it.
