AGRICULTURAL. How to Develop our Agricultural Resources. The agricultural resources of the South, when rightly couriered, are truly wonder ful Wiih' ii climate unsurpassed for its geniality, and which admits of the planting of some of the products of the country every month in tbe year, and a soil of unequalled fertility, she awaits hut to be made what nature designed she should be, the finest agricultural country in the world. The consideiation of this subject neces sarily involve that of the much discussed "labor question," in so much, as it is mainly by labor that our great agricultural resources ure to be developed. To develop them fully, is the great .work before us. To accomplish this work successfully, we need an ample hupply of the host improved agricultural implements now in use. To use these imple ment to. advantage, we require intelligent, reliable labor labor superior both in qual ity and -quantity to that obtained from our ree4nen as they work at present. JFrom whence is this labor to be obtained, n a question which ever since the great change ,in our industrial system, has been discussed by some of the ablest writers of ,the country, but as yet, none, we believe, ihave. reached. a solution of it. "Liebig," a .contributor to Our Home Journal, in a series ,uf articles upon the subject, after pretty clearly demonstrating the impracticability if either Chinese or European skilled labor for the South, auggests as a means of over coming the difficulty experienced, since the war, in obtaining the right kind of labor, that those of our jieoplu engaged in agricul tural pursuits, oil with their coats and take Jiold of the plough handles themselves. This, though it may not be a solution of the question, approximates, we think, a little ,iierer,to oue than anything we have yet .seen. So near in fact, as to touch the key note to a holution of the vexed problem. .Let each and all of tu who arc tillers of the fioil, wit,h a hearty good will, lay hold of ,the plough handles, but at the same time, instead of dispensing with the services of Cutlee,M as we presume "Liebig" intended we should, hold on to him, and make him, by example as well as by precept, the kind .ot laborer we need. Tula plan can be made ,t succeed, alter which the "labor question" Avill have beep solved, as we will then have h supply of reliable labor equal to the de inand. Such is the magnitude of the work .before us of developing our great agricul tural resources, that vastly more labor is required than can be afforded by our white population, even though every white man Xrotu the Potomac to the llio Grange were to become a de facto tiller of the soil. To .luake up the deficiency, the negro element .ot our population is, unquestionably, the ,most available for the purpose. "Culfeo," as ho works al present, and'has worked since ,hd was made free, i with, perhaps, a few .iceptional cases, far from being the right kind of a laborer, . e., one who will accom plish a good day's work, and at the same time do it exactly as it should be done, liven when working on the share system, , he moves sluggishly, idles away his time, tud what little he does is at best but poorly .done. The bare presence of his employer ,or his agent has but littlu efT.-et upon him lor the better. If, however, his employer, instead of only directing him in his work, would lead the way by laying hold of the Loe or plough, as the ease may be, himself, he would be a much more reliable and effi .citrnt laborer. Meeting with a friend, just jilter the war, we asked him what sort of a crop he had. He replied that he had the oesi crop he had for ten years. Upon our expressing surprise at this, on account of the unsatisfactory manner in which the freedmeu were working, he added, with a significant smile, "i work with my freodmen, and the consequence is I get a great deal more and better work out of them." We .Jivtj had considerable experience in the rnanagement ot ireedmen. Besides superin tending them in their work in a sort of a play gentleman way, we have worked side by side with them, and cau add our testi mony to his in favor of the plan. The effect .of the example uf one white laborer upon a giuig.of freedmeu, is uot very dissimilar to that of a true pulling horse or mule upon a baulky team. The- chief difficulty with horses uot properly trained to pull, is in getting them to start. With one well train ed animal, however, to start the wagon, team and all, they not only, as a general .thiug, do their full share of the pulling after the wagon is started, but if properly man aged will soou get in tha way of helping to start it themselves. We kuov too that noldieri, a a general thing, fight much bet ter wheu ld iu a charge by a commanding ollicer, than when he remains iu the rear and orders them to make it. The habit of the gallant Hampton, iu Virginia, was, we are told, always to lead his men into action in stead of directing them to go auJ. do thus ami so. This, doubtless, accounts in great - . t .. I 111- . I & !! measure tor ms urunaui aciitevemei-ts. I ne good etl'ect to be produced by the employer upon 1ns freedmeu by working with tiiem is fur froni being the only advantage to be de rived from the adoption of the plan. The labor of himself and as many able bodi. d sous as ho may be so fortunate as to have, would cost only the wear and tear of a little muscle, and would bo the best quality. This is the kind of labor that tells so won derfully upon Northern larma. There are, doubtless, those who still regard labor upon the farm as degrading. To all who thus regard it, we would say that the idea is one mi the olden time, and w as conceived iu error. Agriculture, as has oft been asserted, is the uoblest calling of man, and no kiud of labor connected with it is either degrading or dishonorable. Souu of the uoblest and best men the world has ever seen, were at times the tillers of the noil. The idea that white man canuot, as u laborer, stand our hot climate, Liebig" averts, has been ex ploded. We can, from experience, bear him out in the assertion. In ante belium times, e were, perhaps, regarded by some as a sort of fancy gentleman. Vo rode fancy horses, wore kid gloves, fancy hats, boots and clothes, kejt an umbrella stretched over our devoted cranium when exposed to the direct rays of the sun, and made love to the prrtty girls in quite a sensational way. Now we think we are about as near "all horse and half alligator," as was ever old Davy Crockett, and can, perhap, come about as near 4'whipping our weight in wild cats, riding on a strtak f lightning ..or jumping 13he the Mississippi," as he ever did., and can do as' much hard work in the hot sun as any body else, regardless of "any previous con dition of servitude, race or colon" On another occasion we raay say some thing in regard to what we consider the most advantageous form of eontraet to make with freedmeu. HILL-SIDE. Death from Glanders. A glandered horse owned bv Koswell C. Miner, of Steu ben, X. V., in blowing his nostrils, threw a drop of the poisonous matter into one of Mr Miner's eyes. He immediately wiped it out, as he supposed, but in a short time (within twenty-four hours) his eye began to pain him. Medical aid was procured and his case pronounced by able physicians a hopeless one; that the glanderous matter had so permeated his system that he could not recover. His tiesh turned purple and was pronounced poisonous. He lingered in asjony about twenty days before expiring. His friends were compelled to bury him early the next morning, and with him the entire bed and bedding on which he had lain. New York News. TO THE PUBLIC. New Storage Ware House.
