AG Ki CULTURAL. Essentials to Productive Farming:. The following sixteen essentials for pro ductive funning are from the pen of the editor of the American Farmer: l. ioo,l iinnleiiviiits of husbandry, and leuty of them, "huh should always be keixt m perfect oniei. 2. jJeep piouniuij ;iuu iouiuuii izaliou .of tije soil by the free use of harrow, drag and roller. 2. An application of lime, marl, or ashes, V lie re calcareous matter or potash may not be present in the soil. . 4. A systematic husbandry of every sub stance oil the farm capable of being con certed into manure, as systematic protec tion of such substances .from loss or by .evaporation or waste of any kind, and a careful application of the same to the lauds iticulture. J&. The draining of all wet lands, so as to relieve the roots of the plants from the ill .effects of a superabundance of water, a con ditiou equally pernicious as drought to their iieal thy growth and profitable fructification. 6. The tree use of the plough, cultivator jtud hoe, with all row-cultured crops, so as jLo keep down at all times the growth of grass and weeds, those pests which prove HOldestructive to crops. 7. Seeding at the proper time with good eed, and an equal attention as to the period .jujC working crops. 8. Attention to the construction of and repair of fences, so that what is made through the toils ami anxious cares of the husbandman, may not be lost through his lcglect to protect his crop from the depre cations of stock. Dail) personal superintetidance on part of the master over the operations of the firm, no matter how good a manager he ,6ay have, or however faithful his hands any be, as the presence of the head of the ,jfartn and the use of his eyes, are worth several pairs of hands. 10. Labor saving machinery, so that one tpay render himself as independent as need fill, of neighborhood labor; as a sense of the Comparative independence of the employer JpOii such labor, beujets a disposition of obe- I f 1 ! 1 .1 . 1 xuence ana iaiuiiuiness on Hie part oi tnc employee. 11. Comfortable stabling and sheds for horses and stock, all the necessary outbuild- llgs lor the accommodation ot the hands itlld protection of the tools and implements ;us well as for the care of the poultry. 12. Clover and oilier grasses to form a part of the rotation crops, and these to be pX proper periods ploughed in to form pabu lum tor succeeding crops. 1 he clover held ifo be cither plastered or ashed each suc ceeding spring one bushel of the former, and six of the latter per acre. 13. To keep no mme slock than can well .be kept, but be sure to keep as many as can be kept in uood condition, as it is a wise policy to feed as much as possible of the crops grown on the farm and thus return to It that which has been abstracted from it. 4. To provide a good orchard and gar den ; one to be filled with choice fruits of all kinds the other with vegetables of all sorts, early and late, so that the table may at all times be well and seasonably supplied, Vnd the surplus contribute to increase the vealth of the proprietor. 15. The taking of one or more good agri cultural papers. 16, It is better to cut grain just before it js lully or dead ripe. When the straw, im nej3iaU'ly before the grain ripens, is t.o dry jthat" on twistjng ;t no juice is extracted, ft should be cut, for then there is no circula tion of juice to the ear. Saving , the Fat and Flesh. Under this head a writer for the Xew York Herald discourses as follows; The flesh and fat of all kinds of domestic .animals are made of grass and grain, which .cost money. In autumn, when feed begins to fail, and the weather becomes cold "and Htorrpy, animals will Jose flesh unless they .are well fed and properly protected from jcold and wet storms. Every pound of flesh ;ind fat is worth, at a low figure, twelve .and a half cents. Flesh and fat is actually worth much more than that stun, in most localities, as there is no bone, no hair, no fW4$n horns nor other waste in those ftrts of the animals. The fat is always first. The flesh next. Now, then, every pound of fat and flesh that is wasted is a dead loss of twenty-five cents to the owner .T,l,be Stock. When ai animal consumes a o,uid of fat in miinlaiiiiug respiration and 'aidmaj heat, the was? is a dead loss, be au&e it can i.ever be re; i i, !. The sub stance that composed that. Jat ami flesh is gone. The grass and grain consumed in making it might just as well, in one sense, have been pitched into the Atlantic ocean. f another sense, it would have lu?en betr fertQ.cast the grass and grain on the land a a renovator of tin soil.' Now, o repro duce the number of pounds t,i tat and Jjesh J,ojt jvill cost less than another twelve and half cents' worth. of grain. There vo-i k$Yc twenty.live cents" in cash tor everv pound ,of flesh produced. Every person who has half an eye can not tail to gee and appreciate this fact. It needs no further elucidation. The person, therefore, who has ten head of cattle, and allows each one Jo fall ayay 1,00 pound? each, loses ten hnn .dred quarters of doJlars, or 250 ! A hun dred pounds of fat and flesh would scarcely Jessed in the appearance of some anf Jiills. And the same rule holds good with jhorses, sheep, swine, and all kiudsof domes ,tic animals. Every pound il,.sh lost is equivalent to so much money actually thfown away. No one can deny it. And ihere is the error in the niamrgoment ; and the grand, practical question is hgw m ave thAt which has heretofore been hst. FURNITURE. P. M. Any such person owning or occupying land contiguous to any highway, and who is assessed to any highway or poll-tax, may cause to be paid of such tax a sum not ex ceeding twenty-five per cent for any yer, by planting trees or shrubs in the margin of the highway, in a space not exceeding eight feet in width from the margin of the highway, which sum, when so paid, shall be credited upon his highway or poll-tax for that year.
