Henry Comstock, Entomologist! i hvj-n & - 'i 1 v ' , iiii com.il cffl ft Or a? 7,1 we :weuenaueu w - chronicle the appearances of the caterpillars with much more certain jMban in previous years. Dimnghi94imethe---Department , : of Agricuitute uMUbed regular j monthly . reports, 'giving, : among other things, the . condition, of the diffei enti crops as sent : in - by y regular fcorrespondenta all "orer ! the ;coantry ; Information given at the time of .' the ravages is; of course, more reliable than that coming up from the memory: after; a term of years. ;Moreo:ver,r.ihfi answers to the 1878 circular will naturally be' more accurate concerning the more .recent years. From -1866 to date, the caterpillars.. have been widespread every -year. " In some years the ravages have been more severe and general than in others; but few locaii- ties in any of the more Southern portions of -the belt can boast exemption during any one year. Both the caterpillars and the boll-worm have been infinitely more inju . . . u . V 1 - 3 i rious than 'in -the time before the war. This as- thought, as before stated, to pro - ceed almost entirely from the general loose- ness and carelessness of the present System, of cultivation; Of course there are many exceptions, but as long as the careless are it! the -majofity the innocent 'must suffer -with the guilty .- In the Spring of 1866 there was a large planting, and many hopes were entertained '-' for the success of -the crop." A fall crop was needed. The : war had impoverished the Soutb, and cotton had riseu greatly in value. The hopes, however, of many were destined not to be -fulfilled. - The cater pillars made their appearance in immense numbers in most of the States, and in many localities destroyed .the whole crop. Louis iana lost one half of her, "whole crop. ( Texas lost 40 per cent j Alabama lost. 42 per cent; and Mississippi lost 30 per cent. - These .'figures are simply general averages lor while in one county everything would be devoured, in another the loss would' be smallTxexas suffered severely all through her' cotton-growing region. They were yery destructive in South , Arkansas, ; and across the river in the richest cotton coun ties of Mississippi, i In Alabama they were first observed in -Lowndes county. They came in. force by the middle of August, and, much of 1 the crop being young from replanting, the damage was very great. Florida escaped this year without' severe injury, anil 'Georgia" was almost .unscathed. Tha caterpillarswere reported as far North as "Wayne, Edgecombe, and. .Franklin coun ties, in North Carolina, but' their numbers were1 few and they came late in the season. The" damage was consequently insignificant. As we haVe'before stated, the fact that the years 1804, 185,' and 1846 had been remarkable caterpillar' years had given rise . to the theory, credited by nearly every one, - that the greatest ravages of . the chenilles were to be expected at intervals of twenty one years,' and j as a result, many had 'been dreading the coming of 1867 as the fourth of these : terrible , years. It proved, ho w ever, to be but little worse than 1866 as a year of general destruction, and it certainly was not as bad as the following year, 1868. In Texas, it is true, it was, perhaps, as de- 1 structive a year as has been experienced, but in Louisiana it was no worse, and in other "States not so' bad as the previous year. , . In Louisiana they were more or less destructive over the whole State. The crops of counties along the . river in Arkansas and Mississippi were partially destroyed, the interior counties of the latter State suffering comparatively little. Their first appearance was in June. In Alabama the Idsses were comparatively slight. Flor ida wasjalspotnraratitely exempt. There Were few reports of losses from Georgia. In "Southland North Carolina the cater pillars were abundant toward the end of the season, but their injuries Were slight in thai latter Statei and not great in the former. , The' believers in the twenty-drie-year the oVy breathed more freely at the close of this season ; but their feelings of relief were premature, as 1868 proved to be one of the worst years yet on record. . The ravages in Texas and Louisiaha'were, perhaps, on the ' whblenbt equar to those- of 1807, but the other States suffered greatly,, In Alabama and Georgia the injuries have only been eqllAfi i by. those of 1873. yThe first noted appearance of the caterpillars in a 86 8 was ' Austin county, Texas, in the latter part of I'Mayv- ;Thi4 was the; earliest appearande up tb this'tixnci on' record, and grave fears were rJa6nce expressed of the failure of the crop. These fears were abundantly fulfilled so far as Austin; county was. concerned, for the crop "was-nearly as early as July by the third brood proper. "Louisiana as a general thing reported unot so bad as 1867," and Arkansas likewise. T. Tn Mississippi the losses were considerable, in some ' localities more' and in others less thau in the 'preceding years. The crops of Georgia, how ever suffered more than those of any other State. . The m6st"hnpfededented injury was . pomt. varouna-ino nyury was greater tnan it had-been before.- Kewberry : district re- turned ay loss Tof 'onfef-thifd,- a jremafkable - ' loisjfdrthis1 State. ' In Louisiina the worms were- tol)e found all over the State, but -not -a single parish' reports any 'loss wdrthy-of note.' In Mississippi, also, the loss - was cdmparathrely insignificant.- In Alabama more damage was done. :A-few counties, which reported small losses the year before, were more severely afflicted this year. The crop in South Caro lina does not seem to have been at all dam aged this year. In Wayne county, North Carolina,- the third brood of caterpillars came in August, the earliest date on record tor that State, and did -some little damage. We should naturally expecr an -increase in the ravages of the worms again in 1870, but the same. causes which reduced their numbers so greatly in 1869 again operated in-1870, the growing season being remark able for long-continued drought. : In the statistical summing up for the year, we find the following remark:- "A general ex emption from ' losses by .insects is noted with occasional exceptions, mostly in Louis iana and Texas. Mississippi was al most entirely exerapt:from severe ravages bv the worms. They were present, but in small numbers. Nearly all of the richest cotton counties of Alabama reported the presenceof the caterpillars in the early part of the year, but the final reports show an entire exemption from severe injuries. None of the correspondents in Florida and Georcia consider 1870 worthy of note as a worm year, though many of them speak of ine unusual lreeaom irom insect pesis. The caterpillars appeared in South Caro lina, and were also reported from Cumber land county, North Carolina, but no dam age resulted. l: K ' 2b be continued." . Geese as Grass-Inters. Uns oi our subscribers whp has had good luck in the cultivation of cotton, was telling us, some days ago, that last year he employed goose labor in his crop with highly satisfactory results. A hoe was never in his cotton at ter he got it to a stand. At that time he turned into it four geese, and, without ever touching the cotton, stalk or leaf, they nipped off every blade of grass just as it ap- pearea nippea n on so cioseiy, too, inai ix, never reappeared, and all season he had the cleanest crop of cotton in his neighborhood. The geese, he says, present two points of superiority over colored labor: tney woik Sunday, as well as efery other day in the week, and they never come to him wanting wages. This year he will again - employ geese in his cotton, but as he will pitch a much larger crop than last year, he will have to increase his lorce. lie is therefore negotiating for the purchase or loan of five additional creese, and with this double force expects to double his crop of cotton. JStatesville Landmark Over Cropping. It is the sheerest follv to plant a larger acreage than can be well cultivated. Good cultivation is essential to make a successful crop, but if the acreage planted is greater than the means for cm tivation the result must be a poor crop or a failure. JLvery farmer ought to know and act upon the principle that one acre well cultivated is worth two badly attended to. We say then if you want a good crop plant no more tnan can be thoroughly cultivated and you will save time," labor and money.
