nURHASrRECORDEJl,
"WEDNESDAY Juiy"l5, 1891
The capacity of the Southern
States for the development of
trade is attracting the attention
of the country in a manner
which cannot fail to make a
deep impression. Last year the
foreign exports from Southern
ports, which amounted to $321,r
000,000, were 20,000,000 in ex
cess of the previous year, and
constituted ten-elevenths of the
gain of the entire country the
ports located in other portions
of the Union than in the South
furnished but $2,000,000 of the
increase. The principal points
at which gains were made
were Galveston, Newport
News, Norfolk add Portsmouth,
Savannah and Wilmington.
The construction of new rail
roads, which have given the
West access to Southern ports,
has, in all probability, contrib
uted to the result, but this shows
that the natural outlet of a
vast stretch of territory; West
of the Mississippi and North of
the Ohio, is by way of Southern
ports, and that the products of
Southern ports, and that the
products of that section, added
to the increased production of
the South will continue to in
crease the volume of trade of
Southern ports. In the change
which has been and is going on,
which is causing the growth of
Southern seaport cities, it is
gratifying to observe that the
Hampton Roads ports are as
suming the importance to which
their position entitles them.
They have made great progress
during the past ten years, but
all indications point to the fact
that the future growth of their
trade will be even more rapid.

"Family trouble?" asked the
neighbor from the next porch.
"That's what it is. It all
came of his keepin' out of
nights."
" I can sympathize with you."
"Well, i don't know whether
you can or not. You tee, about
three weeks ago he started out,
promising to be back by half
past 8. lie didn't come till 10,
and a soon as I saw him I knew
there was something the mat
ter with him."
"Intoxicated, I suppose?"
" No, indeed. He'd got into
the society of some of those
temperance people and siirned
the pledge. Now that he's done
it of course he'B got to stick to
it. First his digestion, and
then his nerves gave way, an'
there ain't any livin with him.

that "some editors are not
