One ef t'-ie most difficult
things for newspaper to do
ii to gat full and accurate parti
culars of a. railroad accident
that bappeni beyond the reach
of its reporters. The railroad
officials absolutely refute to
give particulars, fearing, prob
ably, that should any law
suits arise (and they usually do)
their admissions and statements
might be used to their detri
ment. Be that as it may. per
sons with frieads aboard the
ill-fated train are kept in sus
pense until particulars are ob
tained through other sources.
The Alabama legislature is now
considering a bill which re
quires railroad officials to in
struct conductors of trains of
their respective roads to report
all casualties or accidents im
mediately after the happening
to the nearest telegraph opera
tor, and the operator is at oace
to telegraph the particulars to
the nearest newspaper for pub
lication. A penalty is attached
for failing to comply with this
law. ' '

: A Good Jump tor a Cat.
There is a large Maltese cat
making its headquarters at the
Seventh Police precinct Station j
that is bound to go ou record as
the smartest feline known.
Like all ether cats, it delights
in capturing sparrows, but un
like other cats it has never been
known to let a bird get away
that it made up its mind to
catch. : Lieutenant Thompson
is authority for the statement
that tho cat, perched on the cor
nice of the building made a leap
of twenty-two feet inte a tree
and caught a sparrow. The
Lieutenant ; has also watched
the oat while bird-catching, and
has counted nine sparrows car-1
ried to a spot, and after the
hunt was over devoured one by
one. A peculiar trait ef the cat
is that there is but one man who
reports at the station that she
will make friends with, and he
is Patrolman Rowland., When
he is on night duty the cat will
follow him from the those he
goes on until relieved the next
morning. All the dogs in the
Newburg region have encoun
tered the cat on several occas
ions, and when she is in sight i

In 1892 there were 6,793 mur
