THE DURHAM - RECORDER. E. C. HACKNEY, Proprietor. WEDNESDAY, March 6, 1895. WASHINGTON LCTWI. Washington, March 4. At twelve o'clock today, the fifty third eongress ceased to exist. The last three days of the session are all included in the record under the head of Saturday, March 3, and the session of Saturday con tinued from that morning through out Saturday night and Sunday sight and until today at noon. Why this absure parliamentary technicality should remain in force, in this, the latter part of the nineteenth century is a conun drum which only the average aembar ought to be able to solve. That there is some very ques tionable legislation enacted is a w - w self-evident lact. An iistance of it, is the finale of the Williams Settle, contested election case. Last night by 2 o'clock both Set tie and Williams were voted f 2,500 for fee and expenses. Sometime tgo, these gentlemen were voted f 2,000 a piece for a similar reason. In addition to this, Mr. Settle draws his $5,000 per annum. The fifth congressional district of North Carolina ought surely to be most ably represented in the United States congress. It cost f 9.500 for Tom Settle to represent that district in congress, and it cost $4,500 for Baldy Williams to con test the seat. These are pretty tiff fit-tires for the service ren dered. . The resident. Secretary Car lisle and perhaps Secretary Gres ban will leave the city tomight or tomorrow morning for a fishing trip in the sounds af North Caro lina. The light house tender Violet arrived at the wharf this Qrniag at 7 o'clock. In appointing commissioners to monetary conference the silver men in the senate won a decided victory last nirht. The members are Senators Jones, of Aikansas; Teller, of Colorado, and Daniels, of Virginia, the other three mem bers are to belong to the fifty-fourth mnnesi. Striker Crisp has al ready beta named as one of these Postmaster General Win. L. Wilson will take a brief rest before assuminr the duties of bis office. lie told me Saturday, that as he bad endorsed a number of appli cants for oostoffices in various parts of tie country, he expected n tia a novel experience in acting upon bis own recommcada tions. Mr. Bower made a final effort to get up the Winston public building bill last night in mmmittee of the whole. His ac- tUn an obiected to and the bil is dead. Among the final acts of congress was a measure to retire on half pay a lumber of old officers in the revenue marine service. 1 he president refused to receive the. bill to pay clerks ' an extra month's salaiy. In spite of the decision of the court of claims he declined to sign any bill after i2 o'clock today. The members of his cabinet were at the white house at 9 0 clock this morning and al' hands worked hard until the most important bills were signed. STUOILT B1MINI3HINQ. It is rather strange that the or gans have had very' little to say lately on the subject of wool. Every high protection advocate that predicted the utter destruc tion of the wool industry in the United States when the era of free wool should arrive is in conse quence neglectiag the opportunity of making good the claim, for t&e era of free wool is here. But comn.ercial interests and dealers, as well as manufacturers, who measure advantage and trade by conditions and the law of supply and demand, never did accept the calamity cry of the organs and, with rising valuation everywhere, they find out bow false it has all been. . The market statements the past week shows that the supply of desirable domestic wools issteadil diminishing, while the excess of importation is disappearing. The mills, in turn, are engaged in working out fair sized contracts and in making new engagements for next season's roods. One re port declares that ,-the insprov ment in conditions is the resul natural developments." Free raw material in wools is beginning to have the beneficial effect that any industry must ex peritnce with excessive tariff taxes removed. What IS Gordon aud Bacon were going each other without gloves on the Stump in Georgia. Now they sit altogether in the senate as friends to represent the state.
