Frank Siler, of Charlotte, Be fore Hie Y. M. C. A. . (The Trinity Chronicle.) One of the best addresses that lias beeu delivered before the Young Men's Christian Associa tion in a long time was delivered last Wednesday eveqing by Rev. Frauk Siler, of Charlotte. It w;is the third lecture in the life work series, the theme being on this occasion "The Ministry as a Life Work" While the attendance was not quite as large as it was at the inetting the week before, it was nevertheless good. The " whole audience followed the speaker through his discourse, paying the strictest attention to all that was said. Mr. Siler is a man of puw er and is recogtiized as one of the strongest ministers in his church in this State. Mr. Siler in the beginning gave some figures to show that there has been a decided falling ofl" in the numb r of young men entering the ministry. In speak ing of the reasons for this state of affairs he aid that there were many, but chief among tiiein was the want of higher ideals. The address was divided into four sub topics, viz., the minister defined ; the m nister created ; the minister at work ; and the minis ter surrendered. He defined preaching i.i the language of Phillips Brooks, "Truth through personality." This means that the preacher is to make Christ who, Is the embodiment of Truth known to men. It not requir ed of a minister that he shall ex plore all the departments of truth. All of these other depart ments must be left to others The TRADE MARK REGISTERED " 1 ' '" j ' V I J) THE TOBACCO UAiO with a reputation of twenty-three years. The creation of the preacher is the making of this personal medi um. The first step is in God's gift to the individual is being. The preacher exists in the man. Paul was separated unto the mm istry before his birth. God does not make the man and then make and call the preacher. The preacher and the man are insepar ably one and the call dates from the making. Where this begins the call begins. The self-con scious choice is essential to per souality ; but choice rests on ob ligation, and obligation rests on a capacity for something. In God's thought this talent means a defi nite life work. The problem lor the individual is to find this. To find it he must discover his talent, or more plainly speaking, he must know himself. But to know himsell he must first know Jesus Christ The minister at work will find the proof of the divineness of his call. Dr. Chas L. Goodell, the pastor evangelist of the M. K. Church, preached three years be fore he settled upon the ministry as a life work. A life work it must be ior the gift is a part of life itself. When men are failures in the ministry they should have courage to abandon that vocation as is done in other lines of work. Every man is called to a definite life work, and especially is this true of preachers. "But holding as I do to the traditional belief that the nascent preacher begins with life I see the doom of the man who does not surrender to the call." There are crosses in the way of a life surrendered to the purpose of God, especially if that purpose be the preaching of righteousness from the pulpit ; but there are crowns as well. Enoch was a preacher of righteousues. He stood at the entrance of an avenne wherein have walked a royal host.
