Chesterfield Court House, Aug. 28. Considerable progress waa made Sat urday by the prosecution in the case NO FATALITIES REPORTED Tiie Amount of Damage Is Not Known, Owing to Wires Being Down Storm Waa Central Be tween Savannah anil Charleston Sail! iik of Vessels Interered. With. of Henry Clay Beattie. Jr mho is on trial for his life charged with the murder of his young wife at a lone ly spot on the Midlothian turnpike last month. A number of important "wit nesses, including one of the detectives who has been prominent in the case from the beginning and several boys, tbe prosecution's strong cards, were beard. There were many tense moments for the prisoner as tbe prosecution, though the testimony of Detective U L. Scherer, particularly uncovered fragments of conversation which he is alleged to have had with Beattie con cerning Beulah Binford, the girl in the case. Plainly evident was tbe hand of the prosecution in endeavoring to show tbe underlying motive for the murder, the fear of Henry Clay Beat tie, Jr., that his father might learn of tbo resumption of relations with the Binford girl and the alleged phy . sicial ailment of Beattie at the time of the murder. The court in fact, decerning the intention of the prose cution to unfold this part of the mys tery, asked permission from tbe law yers of both sides to defer the discus sion of this point on tbe stand until another occasion when other witnesses including Dr. Mann, whose informa tion in this connection was stricken out four days ago, might be recalled. The Commonwealth drew tight tbe lines of circumstantial evidence when it brought to tbe stand consecutively, a half doien youths who were return ing from a dance on the night of the murder and stopped at the spectacle of the stationary car, the man work ing on the. hood, and . tb. . woman standing on the running board. One of the boys. W. B. Sydnor. identified the Beattie car. brought to the court house for s first inspection by the jury, as the identical one, both aa to make and fittings that he and his companions spied that night. Close upon this was Detective Sberer's narrative of Beattie's Incon aistent e.nd varying conversations with him in endeavoring to explain the presence of the pool of blood in ' the road. Detective Sherer's testi mony laid the foundations for tbe fu ture contention of the prosecution that Beattie shot his wife, while standing either on tbe running board or in tbe roadway and that the pool of blood did notaoos through the foot-boards or lower part of the ma chine but resulted from Mrs. Bee tle's fall when shot near the car. Besides pointing to the cumulative testimony of the boys as to the pres ence of Beattie and his wife on tbe secluded road, the prosecution throagb F. B. Adams, another boy. scored s point when the youth toid of seeing a man alone beaide a ma chine aimilar to tbe Beattie car on tbe selfsame road three hours before the murdT is supposed to have hap pened. Adams' testimony bore out the charges of the pruecution that Beattie could have brought the shot gun obtained from Paul Beattie to the place where a few hours later he conducted his ill-fated wife. Tbe Commonwealth let it be known outside (he court room, too, that it bad discovered a witness, a negro named Wilkes who would testify that be saw the two machine loads of . . boys aa well as Beattie and bis wife but no other vehicle or person along tbe road at that hour. By this testl Bioey it is apparently hoped to quash Beattie s story of the bearded highwayman. , Savannah, Ga., Aug- 28 Charles ton, Beaufort and other smaller South Carolina coast points, were completely cut off from communica tion with the 'outside world as the result of a severe storm which broke over this section last night, The wind Here reached a velocity of 60 miles an hour and did considerable damage to pioperty. So far as is known no lives have been lost. South of Savannah there is slight damage to wires, the storms opera tions being confined to this city and the region north of here. . Last night the local wireless sta tion was in communication with a number of rhips at sea. The Clyde liner Apache from New York was off the Charleston harbor unable to go into Charleston on account of the storm. The Mohawk of the same line was unable to leave Charleston. Very high tides are reported from Tybee Island, and earlier, before the wires were lost from Beaufort, 8. C. Effort to get into communication by wireless with Charleston also fail ed and nothing is known here of the extent of damage there. Tbe storm came as a sudden sur prise to the shipping. It was born at sea and struck almost ' without warning. Blazing rockets were sent far into the murky sky above Savan nah last night, warning inhabitants of exposed islands along tbe Georgia coast. Tbe building committee, . which went over to Chapel Hill from Dur ham Friday to select a site for the erection of the new educational build Ing at the University, completed the preliminary work and returned to Durham Friday afternoon. The site selected ie what is known as the Gore lot, situsted near the west entrance to the ctriepus. This lot is occupied by the residence of Professor Patter eon st the present time. The Frank P. Milburn Company, of Washington, were selected as achiteersifor the building. The plans submitted by the Milburn company were mo.-e in accord witn tne ideas of the committee than any of tbe other plans submitted. Work will be commenced on the ne-v bulldirg as soon as possible and pushed to immediate completion. The Perilous Yours. Justice Ford, of JUYorwe fmw www Justice Ford, of New York waa dis cussing his famous dictum "Iu my opinion it takes about five years for the ordinary couple to learn to over look each other's faults. . Justice Ford, elaborating the dic tum, said: ' . After five years of mardrlage a spirit of gentleness and loving kind ness manifests itself.
