Spencer. The Southern Railway Company is having delivered at its Spencer shops 20 mammoth locomo tives from the American Locomotive Works, at Richmond, Va. Neither Mr. Bluster nor Miss Ayers knew of the fact until the dog was killed, although Mr. Bluster was suffering with a great swollen limb, which was bitten by the dog. Fire of unknown origin Saturday night totally de stroyed the plant of the Rocky Mount Sash and Blind Company, en tailing a loss of about $45,000, with $12,000 Insurance. The flames are supposed to have originated In the planing-room. The plant burned like tinder and although the local Are department worked heroically, nothing of the entire plant, includ ing lumber on the three-acre plat, could be saved. Several firemen were overcome by the intense heat and the smoke of the rich pine so rapidly devoured by the flames. The destruction of the plant wJU throw about 60 laborers out of employ ment. A committee consisting of Drt J. Y, Joyner, of Raleigh; Judge J. S. Manning and Mr. J. S. Hill, of Dur ham, and President F. P. Venabls, of the University of North Carolina, are today selecting a site and going over tbe plana for the erection of the new educational building at tbe University. , . . t 1 ' Tbe new building Is to be erected at a cost of mors than $50,000, the greater part of which sum Is donated to the University, from the Peabody fund. The announcement of the Peabody gift waa made at the last commencement exercisea of the Uni versity. The committee named above waa selected at that time ,as a building -committee to have in charge the selection of a alts and the erection of the building. Tbe committee has for some time been working on the selection of a site. An attempt was made to buy a site outside the land owned by the University. A deal has been pending for some time with the owners of a piece of property near the campus, but tbe owners have decided not to felt Falling in this, the committee has decided to erect (he building oa the college campua and the site will be decided today. There are a num ber of architectural concerns which are bidding for tbe contract for drawing the plans.
