Bert Stevens was in town a few days the past week from the Brcm ner country having cumr in to re cord some claims. He returned Tuesday and will prospect in that district this summer. He was much pleased with Valdez and satisfied with the amount of business he did while here. Last Saturday night the Social Club held their second summer 1 toys’ dance at the Moose hall, and it was a most en joyable affair. A pood sized crowd was present, a nice lunch was served and the mu sic was excellent. The dance was a decided success, Mrs. Minnie Bonnet who came by the Kxcclsior on a brief visit to friends here returned l»y the snnie steamer to Juneau. It is her in tention to spend the summer with her parents in New York city. She will visit relatives at Seattle and Los Alipclas on her way east. \V. C. The very welcome sound of the whistle of the Valdez saw and plan ing mill was heard for the first lime at six o'clock last evening. Messrs. The owners expect to do a large busi ness and theri- is no doubt that they will. They will manufacture all kinds of rough and plained lunulcr in large quantities. This enterprise opens up a new industry for Valdez that may assume large proportions. Thcreare large quan tities of excellent timber on the Sound, and this ean be easily got ten to the mill at a reasonable figure so that lumber ean lie shipped from here and landed at |H>ints along this coast cheaper than from Seattle. Record Trip for Yukon Mail. The Yukon mail arrived here last Tuesday, just fourteen and a half days from Eagle, the fastest time vet made. The mail was stamped assorted and checked up in fifteen minutes at the |>ost office, and was then taken almurd the Str. Excelsior which was awaiting it, and started immediately for Seattle. This mail will make the fastest time yet made between the Yukon ami Seattle via the all-Am erican route and Valdez. Thanks, Ever bo Much. Work on the Moon Shine group j of quartz claims is progressing! rapidly under the supervision of I Frank Nelson. He bus run in u tunnel 74 feet and has just struck | the lode and found a good I tod v of ore 1 but it is not known yet how large the vein is where it has been struck bv the tunnel. On the surfuae the \ vein is three feet wide. Samples of this ore are very tine and have assayed from 12 to 30 per cent in copper and from $4 to $12 in gold. Mr. \\ . I). Heidhorn of this place, is the owner of this property. We have a splendid mail service j between this place and Valdez. Tin- foreman at the (iladhaugh mines says that he only employs white men to accommodate them. [So they can pay their store bills we sup|Misc.] He is employing mostly natives at the present time. When he first came to Kllamar lie was going to sink the third com partment in the shaft, which was sunk by Jas. Ban non from the 100 to the 200 foot level, at $3.00a foot, j Since that time he has had some little experience and has sunk 25 feet at a cost to the company of' nearly $25 a foot. Letter from Copper Center. I Copper Center. April 7. To The Prospector: People who eame over the (iov crunicut trail sit up nights to sing it's praises to us poor glaeier hikers. Kvcryoite who eame that way tells me they hail a delightful trip, and judging from the time they made, they must lie teliing the truth. The people who value the glaeier route are doing some thinking. 1 have always traveled the glaeier trail in winter, and 1 never seen it in a worse condition than it was this year. The teaveling has heen had all the way from 12-Mile Camp. The country from Moose Camp down is infested with rahhits. All the Siwashes from up the river are camped here. They are a Well fed looking lot this spring. The In dians have established a price for rahhits. "Two hit one lohhit; one cup Hour one lohhit; three lohhit | one cut tea.” HIix has quite a store here and Hotel Holman is running full blast. The Imys are very; thankful for the papers and mail sent by the Phosi-kitok. Tunasi Kosy arrived here safe and sound 1 and is now making some sketches of Mt. Wrungel. The volcano and crater which arc usually very white at this time of the year is now quite 'black. The "old girl” • must lie angry al*out something.
