Horseback riding is quite the proper thing now, but hereafter it will only l>o indulged in during the first part of the week. It would be well for Crawford to adopt some peculiar signal of his own. so that the inhabitants of the town would not be rubWr-necking for a steamer whenever the whistle blows. One of our young and popular merchants purchased a large amount of furniture and household goods last week, and it looks as though there might be a job for the minister in the near future. At the A. C. Co’s unction sale on Tuesday, fair prices were received for everything. Rice was sold for f> cents, corn meal .‘1 cents, horse sleds $1K, one complete outfit sold for $25. James McHie was auc tioneer. The Ladies’ Aid Society meets this afternoon at the home of Mrs. Fish. It was their intention to meet each week at Mrs. Leedv’s but as they have no work to do, will meet at Mrs. Fish’s for a so cial afternoon. The steamer Discovery arrived here last Sunday from the west ward and left in the evening for Seattle. This is her last trip on this run. She made good time to the westward and back having pleasant weather the entire time. At the business meeting of the Endeavor Society last week, a vote of thanks was given to the man who recently sent a load of wood to the reading room. While many of the boys who used the room dur ing the winter have gone into the interior, yet a large number spend a part of their spare time there now. The lioat builders are now very busy. A number of boats are al ready built and are being painted. . while others are on the way and a number of orders are expected on the arrival of the next boat. Copper Center, Apr. 24.—The rear guard of the glacier trotters passed through here a few days ago. Todd, Frazier, Ed Hooker, Kohcr. Hcher Smith, von Zeiftc and Berg are now on their way up the Cop per. Captain Johnson and the Jones party were the last to como over the government trail. They left for Slate creek yesterday Shelleys packers are camped north of the Tazlina. Cobh* party are camped here now but will move to Tazlina tomorrow. (iuiteau broke the record between here and Tazlina yesterday with his favorite mule “Jack-pot.” Montgomery and outfit arrived yesterday. Snow has entirely disappeared at this place and the river is breaking up fast. The weather is warm and sleighing is about over for the season. Station Three, Apr. 24—The can yon Wtwccn here and the relief cabin is impassable. The Stewart creek canyon was in good condition vesterdav but mav break up at anv time. Tonsina. Apr. 24- Mr. Jles’s party have been camped here during the past three days. They will move to Willow creek today. The snow has entirely disappeared from the trail and Mr. lies is having a hard time of it. Trappers Arrive from Klutena. Aleck Johnson and P. Graff have just returned from an extended hunting and trapping expedition to the interior. Last January they left here with a sled load each, crossed the glacier and settled down for a seasons hunt along the upper Klutena. They hunted throughout all that country, hut got nothing until on their way out when they got one goat on the mountain along the glacier. They report the Klutena as open and about three days ago there was a heavy fall of snow on the north side of the glacier. All those who have an idle hour may lie seen either on the dock, watching the pile driver or else at the sawmill, where logs are rapidly Iteing converted into Imards. The sawmill is quite a novelty to most of the jieople. Its capacity is about fifteen thousand feet a day. At present it is in rather rough condition, but will soon lie closed in and floored. After a short time the run way will lie smooth enough to accomodate the kids and then the mothers will 1m kept busy half soling and heeling the small* pan taloons. Dentist. M. T. Tony Perault arrived in town Tuesday afternoon from the Chis tuchina. He brought out part of the dogs which had l*een used by the Cole party. He came by way of the glacier, making the trip 'in four days. Tony will remain here until June, when he will accom pany Tom Reynolds to Slate creek with horses. He left the crowd fifteen miles up the Chistuchina. They have had a snow trail all the way this season and it has delayed them considerably. It is surprising what a variety of talent there is in Valdez. A few nights ago there was a case of sick ness in town. Dr. Riley was sum moned. as well as Dr. Von Gun ther, hut the latter, owing to some thing being wrong with the tele phone system, could not l>e taised. When Dr. Riley appeared on the scene, he found a- number of the medical fraternity already in charge. They were Drs. A. Parks. Ed. Bur gue, C. Gillis, M. Edwards, J. Lee and Ellwood. Al. White and Jake Stead were acting as messengers. Alvah Eames held the position of nurse and James McHie had ap plied for the job of acting as un dertaker. The Istard of sympathy consisted of A. Swan and J. Snyder. While it is a credit to our town to have so many men who can rise to an emergency of this kind, we think, in justice to the practicing physicians, that these dark horses should get diplomas. Bill says he wants to take a look at the country around Valdez this summer, as lie believes there is gold, copper, coal, i>etro leum and liear within sight of Val dez and he is going to locate all these liefore he leaves for his claim on Miller gulch in June. He ex pects to make the trip to Slate ••reek in two days on his bronco.
