Copper River Red, the well known hunter of this place has! distinguished himself again, this time hv killing the largest hear that lias ever been killed by a j white Ilian near Valdez. Last Sat urday, while hunting near the third bench of the glacier, lie saw an immense bear, and nothing daunted, sat down calmly on a boulder and opened tire on the enemy. Four shots settled the fate of bruin. In someway known only to himself. Red skinned and dressed the animal and got him to the foot of the glacier. Yesterday be engaged a team and brought in the meat and hide. Since then there has been a constant stream of visitors at his cabin, examining! the remains of the old animal. The skin of the l>ear is eleven feet long and eight feet wide, and weighs lot) poinds. The fur is in j excellent condition, being thic k j and of fine quality. It is estima- i ted that the animal weighed 12iX) pounds and was very old as his t* eth were nearly worn off. Red will probably send the skin out to l»e mounted, and no doubt will receive a large price for it. May 20.—We June hail a wet snow for the last five days, which is taking off the win ter "mantle of white” at a great rate. The snow is now only nlmut1 21 feet deep. Unlit. Coles made the first clean up of the season May lti. Bert McDowell. Sant Tavlor and Alex Ohlhauscn have started a new hole about To feet up the di vide from the one sunk last year. I he surface prospects go 10 cents to the pan. It is already through the frost. McDowell tells me he made an examination of the old slwt't. and found it just as it was left last season. None of it had fallen in. The chamber drifted in last year by Sponbcrg was perfectly dry. Alex.. Ohlhauscn’s hand is nearly well. Nearly everyone is in camp and the work of making sluice lmxc.-l has commenced in earnest. Demp sey has bought the tent formerly occupied and used hy Lou Stcngcr its a saloon, and will convert it into a free library and reading room. I understand the Tacoma claim will l>e worked to the limit this \ liar. Many thousand l'ect of lum K-r are on the ground and the! I dace looks like a town. The two largest camps on the •reek are on the “Humdinger*’ and ■Tacoma” claims. The east side >f the Humdinger is a solid line of tents nearly the full length of the •laim. Nearly all the men camped there will 1«- employed on the prop .■rty this summer. Itert llurd is coming I with a large supply of material and will work every man lie can gi't; and try to clear his property ofthedeht iliat has lieen placed upon it. The decision handed down hy Judge llrown and published in the i’nos l-koto u, scents to have given universal satisfaction.though many of the men think Mr. Wilkie overpaid. Jim tiarrett’s claim on Miller gulch will he worked by Jake Jac obson. Jake has engaged the Ham mond pack train to take out his dust, (iarrett says l.ou Stenger will take his out for him. Hob Cole will work the Colc-Jaeoh'oii claim. This property did well last season and will do better this year. Skinner-Wina ns-Koln-son’s claim will Id- worked to the limit, as will the next one above, the Marie. This property was tied up last year, but will lie worked a* long as there is any water this season.
