Charity Ball. The Charity Ball given last night by the Eagles Club, for the benefit of the hospital, was a complete suc cess in every respect despite the efforts of lhe“knoekers.” The Moose hail, in which the dance was given, was beautifully and artistically decorated; the ante rooms, which had been completed for the occasion, looked inviting and cheerful, and the whole house seemed to bid welcome to the guests. At ten o’clock there were about 150 people present and the sceue was a gay one. The music was excellent, being furnished by Prof. Stoel, piano; Edwards, violin; and Mitchel, cornet. At midnight a lunch was served by Liolden & Frias, which was said by ail to be the best lunch served at a dance this winter. Approach and Large Warehouse. Local Parties Interested. Valdez is to linve a large and I commodious whart in the near fu ture, and one that will meet the requirements of tin* large and in creasing business that is rapidly and surely coming to this city. At the next meeting of tin- C’itv Council. Messrs. Adam Swan, .1. L. S.cole, of this place. I*. [). Blodgett of Kodiak and Oapt. C. J. Johansen will apply for a franchise to build a wharf at the foot of Keystone avenue. The new wharf is to be lotto feet long. 20 feet wide and the T will be KJOxHOO feet in size with a warehouse ample enough for the business of the town. The ap proach will extend across Front street so that the high water will not interfere with trartie. While tin* above named gc n*!e mcn are applying f<*r th** franeiiise. it is uinierstood on good auiicoriiv that the I’aeilte Coast Steamship Company is behind tin* proje<*t and contemplate making Valdez the terminus of the run of their steamers or a portion of them. It is expected that the wharf will lie completed by 'he first of June. The prc-sein wharf is inadequate ior the fast increasing business, and it is almost impossible for the company to handle the compara tively siuui 1 business at the pres ent linn.. There is no doubt but tlint if tiie wharf is not completed in a short time, the steamers will have to land their gncxls on lighters or the beach. The Pull Dress Ball. The ladies of the town were in vited in the early part of last week to attend a “full dress” hail at the Moose hall on Friday night, anil it living the, first occasion of the kind in Valdez, the ladies made great preparations for the affair. For several days before the event, the ladies could lie seen at the various stores buying long sized gloves, low cut shoes, laces, frills and all kind. of airy things and when they ar rived at the hall they looked inos charming and sweet. It had been noised about that a number of the Ward McAllisters had ordered full dress suits, and ii was supposed that they would ‘‘shine” like Solomon in all Ids glory. But when they all appear from the smoking room for the first dance, a shout of laughter and groans went up from the ladies, for the Itoys were nearly all dressed in overhalls and jumpers as if just in from the trail. In order to make the surprise the greater, Walter White had pre vious to the dance, called on sev eral of the young ladies in a full tlress evening suit and all suspic ion as to what the affair would re ally lie was allayed and the sur prise when they arrived at the hah was complete. The hoys wore thets trail clothes during ihe entire even ing and next morning all were very sore from dancing in their moccasins. The affair was a com plete success and thoroughly en joyed by all present. llon’t miss the Uixing contest at Vontianther's hall tonight. Reservation Residents Meet.
