On The Trail. Ho! for the trail; the M a Inrun tee wail, The prospector® life so free, OYr thetnominn with the fleet dog train, And the "nutthanrihaw and gw.’’ The leaders yelp, »» he call* for help, l'o live the strenotts life, The joker’s lark and the huskies hark. And the joy and toil And strife. The crunching .led. and tin* spruce bough hod, And the fare that does not fail. To yield a zest to the welcome rest. In the sail-house by the trail. The fitful gleam of the frozen stream. And tlie snow-drift longnud deep. The mountain hare and the bliz zard's blare. And the winds that howl and Weep. The raven black on the beaten track. And the crow that wicrdlv caws. The roar and crash, as the snow slides dash. To the canyon’s gaping jaws. Tlio.dreary slop, on tie- glacier top, Where the whirlwind stavs to rest. To gather hreath for the rnee to death. Hv mightier whirlwinds pressed. Tie-frozen nose- and theaehing tires. And glorious hopes ahead. Studies untold, of eopjier and gold. And silver and tin and lend. Over the snow from Valdez they go. With many a laugh and song. Hardships they I war and uangers they dare. All buoyant and brave and strong. There comes no di e.am of tlu* nug-, gets gleam, To haunt their pillows by night. ■ Though Well they know a million or so. Would help tliem to k«*t*p things right. A. M. Valdez. 4 . From the wharf at Kodiak the sheep j were driven on the hills and mead-' ows hack of tho town where they j will enjoy the line grass provided so lavishly by nature. Mr. Vessev had considerable trouble with nu ivo dogs lielonging' to inhabitants of'Kodiak, whiehj are insufficiently fed by their own ers. especially natives, who are fol-j lowing the precept of holy religion . of Russia:*1 That man of to-morrow provides for to-morrow,” are run-j ning around hungry and their use- i less curs have done considerable j damage to'tlie 'sheep. tvx sheep I were kill*cl and over twmtvgo;; crippled the first day. Judge John Uoodell acted as toastmaster ami a better one could not have lieen well chosen. The Judge always says the right thing' at the right time. F. M. Brown gave the address of welcome and -poke in high terms of Judge Wick ershara, of his high standard as man and jurist and of the arduous and difficult position which he has just held at Nome and which, as the speaker said, were the most trying and difficult that a judge was ever called ujion to perform. Judge Wickcrsham replied in a | short and point is 1 address, thank ing tin* bar association for their cordial welcome and asking their: assistance in carrying to a success ful i-sut! the term of court that is shortly to lie commenced lw*re. He si Mike of the high calling oi the lawyer, of his participation, which was the greatest of any profession al man. in the building up of a new civilization and state*, espec ially of their duty and opportunity in assisting in building up four or more great states here in Alaska. Captain Eugene Wilson, who, l>esides lieing an efficient officer of the L". c>. Army, is a member of the har, sjiokc on "the Army and the Law.” His address was one of the master pieces of the evening. Mr. Heilig spoke for the ‘‘Court Officials” and told the attorneys a few of the things they might ex pect at court. Mr. O. P. Hubbard's subject was ‘‘Railroads,” and the speaker has no doubts in his mind that a railroad will lie built from Valdez to Eagle and it was also the general impression of those present. Judge J. Y. Ostrander spoke of the “Resources of Alaska” and the speaker believes as the rest of all good Alaskans do in this regard. W. H. W’hittlesy read a very hu morous jmper on “Admiralty;” D. T. Roy s|M>ke on the “lawyer in Polities" and Henry ('. King told of his experiences as an attorney in the mines. These addresses were interesting and. well received. Governor Leedy closed the toasts with a few well-related “Reminis cences” which were quite interest ing aud received with much ap plause. This closed a most pleas ant affair and judge and lawyers are better acquainted and a con geniality and friendship has sprung up among them which should help and assist them in the arduous court duties that may conic up in the future. Those present were: Judge James Wiekershum, John Goodell, F. M. Brown, Capt. Eugene Wilson. A. R. Heilig. O. P. Hubbard, N. V. Horton, J. Y. Ostrander, J. F. Rice, W. H. Whittlesey, D. T.
