The court published a reply saying that it was his intention to send the man to jail if after hearing the testimony he considered it his dutv. m Washington, April 5—The fight between Roosevelt and Harriman is still occupying the attention of the eastern newspapers to the ex clusion of all other news. The president, in an interview 3res terdav, stated that he had positive information that the cor porations had raised 15.000,000 to be used to contrpl the national conventions. He charges that i Harriman and Rockefeller are backing H^arst and are preparing to conduct the fight to a finish. Roosevelt intimates that if neces sar\' he would run for a third term in order to defeat the plans of the corporations. Chicago, April 5—Joe Gans and Harry Lewis have signed papers for a fight to take place within three months for the lightweighi championship of the world. Bat tling Nelson was present but re fused to make a match with Gans because enough money was not offered. San Francisco, April, 5-—Heney has learned that one of the men on the Ruef jury is a lotterv agent who has beeu closely associated with Ruef. He will endeavor to have him discharged. Chief of Police Dinau has deserted the Ruef cause and is aiding Heney in every way possible. Ruef threatens that if he is sent to the penitentiary he will see to it that William Herrin, political manager of the Southern Pacific road goes wfth him. * On Taylor creek near Nome miners have struck steam. | Seattle, April 5—An officer of the Japanese vessel Shibeforo Ma ru, which sailed yesterday from this port, induced a white woman to go aboard the vessel and shang* haied her. The woman’s child was left on the dock as the vessel pulled out, crying for its mother. The State department has been notified of the outrage, but ho news has has been received of the action taked regarding it. The trainmen have been allowed an advance of from 7 to 10 per cent. A contract has been signed by the parties which will prevent any danger of a strike ior two years at least. New Orleans. April 5—Alexan dria, the county seat of Rapides county, this state, was nearly de stroyed this morning by a cyclone. New York, April 6—The steamer City of Troy caught fire last night while going to Albany and in^ a few moments was aflame the whole length. She was run in close to the Gould dock, but the flames be came so fierc** that the passenger# had to jump into the river to es cape being burned to death. They were all picked up. Jackson, La., April 6—A cyclone yesterday afternoon demolished the hospital at this place killing four white men and five negroes. Con siderable damage was done to j other parts of the town and the surrounding country. Seattle, April 6—Constantine, who was yesterday convicted of as sault on Hall and sentenced to two years, has been released on $12.
