General Strike Starts Seattle, June 26 — A general strike of the telegraph operators was called at noon yesterday, and they are going out all along the i line. It is expected that unless the strike is settled promptly that a few days will see the entire coun try shut off from the commercial telegraph business. Chicago, June 26—All the rail roads centering here have decided that they will take no st ps toward contesting the two cent fare rate. This rate will he adopted univers ally throughout the United Slate within a few weeks. Boise, June 26 — Nine miners, who were driven from Colorado at the time of the labor troubles, have appeared as witnesses for tin defense in the Haywood case. They contradict the evidence given by Orchard, declaring that the lat ter had often threatened to kill tin governor. Denver, June 26—The Associa tion of Independent Mine Workers of the World charge that the offic ials of the Miners Federation em ployed safe breakers to secure the records of the Mine \\ orkars. Several arrests will be made soon as a result of the charges. San Francisco, June 26— The Southern Pacific has discharged a large number of telegraphers who were sympathizers of the striking operators. The men in the em ploy of the railroad company will go on a strike if the discharged men are not reinstated at ofiee, Seattle, June 26 — Bora Beebe Cook, the divorced wife of Swift water Bill, has started suit against her present husband for divorce, alleging that Cook is spending all her alimony money. Cook has filed an atiswer stating that his tvife wdshes a divorce so as to re marry Swiftwater, who is now penniless at the home of his father in Oakland. Seattle, June 26—The suit start ed by the McGilvray estate pre vents the sale of the shore lands and effectually ties up the exposi tion funds. It will be necessary for the state to appropriate suffic ient money to enable the fair to go through until such time as the suit is settled. Washington, June 26—On ac count of the trouble in Salvador and Guataruala, the cruiser Mil waukee has been ordered to Cen tral Ameiica. Seattle, June 26 — The steel steamship Seward, which has been built for the Northwestern Steam ship Co., was launched yesterday* The new vessel, which is 40(J fe^t in length, and the best equipped steamer on the Pacific coast, will he placed on the Valdez run as soon as she can be fitted up. Jackson, Miss., June 26—James I\. Vardaman, governor of this state- was converted at a revival meeting here last night, and went to the altar weeping and declaring that lie was willing to surrender his all to the cause of Christ, so he could live a better man. Varda nian is a democratic governor who- term expires next January. Se-dtle, June 26 — The govern ment has decided to erect a wire less station at Beattie in order to be able to receive reports from the shipping along the coast. A num ber of boats operating #along the northern run will install wireless plants on hoard as soon as the gov ernment station is completed. Chicago, June 26 — Two thous and messages are tied up here, some of them two days late in sending. Many of these are for Alaska and the Pacific coast. All business is being accepted subject to delay, and it is pfobable that all Alaska business will have to go forward to Seattle by mail for transmission over the cable, until the strike is settled.
