Provisions for Kataila J H Rogers came up yesterday morning from Kataila to make arrangements for having some pro visions shipped to that town lie stated that when he left there was only sufficient food to last the town two weeks, and as the recent outgoing boats were unable to stop to uuload, it is probable that by this time provis ions ars very scarce in the breakwater city. The Bertha took 80 tons of food stuff, and if she cau succeed in un loading, this will relieve the situation fcr a few days, but as there are 2500 men iu the camp and little chance of any steamer unloading during the winter months, there is bouud to be considerable suffering before spring. It has been the policy of the Kataila Co. to carry no surplus of supplies, as they believed they could land freight at any time The officers have been repeatedly told that they would have to lay iu a stock during the summer to last practically all winter, but they iguored the aaviee and now will have to suffer the con sequences, which may be ve;y serious. Owing to the scarcity of provisions all the laboring men who were shipped from her* for Kataila will undoubtedly be carried on to Seattle, even if the weather is 6ucb that the vessels can step. Bunnell, Orr & Co’s, office Phone 26 It will be 40 years the 19th of this month (October) since Secretary Wil j ham H. Seward made the famous pur-1 j chase of Russian America and caused , ; Alaska to become one of the posses sions of the United States. Many j writers who have visited the North land in recent years have woven; English words into beautiful sen tences, and given grand samples of word painting to express their admira tion of the man who, with prophetic eye, saw the possibilities of the coun try which in the Russian language meau9 ‘‘great land.” Statesmen, writers and statisticians claim that the real greatness of the United States be gan with the discovery of gold in Cali fornia; that the North would have won out in the war of the rebellion had it not been for the flood of wealth that flowed trom the mines of the golden state, etc. From this U is ditticult to compare the possibilities of Alaska; in fact, the matter is simply beyond conjecture. Alaska, vast as ..be is, is yet a virgin land as far as her iimneuse resources are known, and generations will be born, reared and become the fathers and mothers of ! other geueratio s, before the resources of the couutry are all known and the door of opportunity is closed tu those who desire to reach out for the oppor tunities which William H. Seward made possible o»i that memorable 19th day of October. 1867, when for the sum I nf 67,200.100 he purchased the country from Kussia and gave it. as a heritage j to the boldest of the American citizens —Ex. -- Madam D.
