The train careened over to one side, and the engineer and brflkemen only pre vented the locomotive from keel ing over outright by shoveling in dirt and improvised ballast on on 9 side or the other of the track, as the occasion demanded. There was a detention of sixteen hours there, which the hungry passen gers and train hand9 improved by breaking into the stores of canned pork cna beans consigned to Ari zona merchants. The incident was one to be long remembered. All three of these trams runevery day in the week. The 5jl5 P. M. train con tinues, as it has for months pasi, to be an entire night the quickest to Washington of any train out of this citv. The B. & O. is the pa y route between the East and t e Vet via Washington. All w- reaching the National . circuitous routes. The new B. & O. Sleepers are attract ing aide spread attention and creating the most favorable com ment?. In many respects superior to the cars in use on other lines they have at the aame time all the advatages possessed in otuer cars Of the improvements the most noticeable one is the length of the car, it being from one to two sec tions longer than tho oroiu&ry sleeping car, and is higher, wider and more comodious in every way, An improvement which will add very much to the plea sure of smokers " eng route" is the remarkably large smoking apartment in the car. It is fully ten feet square, affording ample accomodations for a dozen people, and I his too without occasioning any inconvenience whatever when the door is opened or shut. This advantage will certainly .be appreciated by those who have so longbeenoblidged to double then. - selves up in small compartments and be put to the ineoavenience of getting up every time a train man or passenger happens to pass 111 or out of tliH door of tha car. As inquires are constantly being made relative to the requirements 1 ofthe 'aw us to work on mining claims; that is, the date when such work must be done. We publish below the amendment to the law passd in January lust. It would pay our mining friends to cut it out, and retain it for futu re reference. An act to amend sections 202-1 and 2325 of the Revised Statues of the Uniled States concerning mineral lands. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, that section 2325 of the Revised Statues be amended by adding thereta the following words: ' Provided, That where .he claimant for a patent is nota resident of or with in the land district wherein the vein, lode, ledge or deposit sought to be patented is located, the ap plication for patent and the aflida vits required to be made in this section by the claimant for such patent may be made by his, her or its authorized agent is conver sant which the facts sought to be establithed by said affidavits. And provided, That this section shall apply to all applications now uen- ding for patents to mineral hinds." Sec. 2 That section 2324 of the Revised Statues of the United States be amended by the follow ing words: " Provided, That the period within which the work re quired to be done annually on all unpatented mineral claims shall commence on the 1st day of Jan uary succeeding tho date of loca tion of such claim, and this sec tion shall apply to all claims local ed since the 10th. day of May, A. D. 1872 Approved Jan. 22 1SS0. Arizona's rood Name. Arizona enjoys a very good re putation in the East. In the management of of her mines the Comstock "system" has been re versed. Instead of constantly calling for assessments, the an nouncements of a mine entering the ranks of the dividend paying is by no means infrequent. This fact ii duly appreciated by careful business men, and it cannot but result in a great inpouring of cap ital to help in the development of our properties. There are a few cases of " manipulation " coming to the ironl, but they so shadowed by the honest and eco nomical management of so many othes properties that their evi effect is not felt. On this head the New York Mining News has the following tosay: The management of the Arizo na properties placed in New Y01I has been uniformly .tn.-iiMe and universally satisfactory. We wil name no names, hut we venture to suggest that the example set by soma Arizona parties might with advantage be followed by managers of mines elsewhere. The works on the Central Itaib road are progressing with great speed. It is expected that on the 25lh of November the track shall be laid to near Tula, about GO kil- omelies from this capital.
