Keep the resolutions that you made on New Year's day. Carry the news to Grover, that Ira Mabbett, another old soldier iand pensioner is dead and $8 a month is saved to the United States Government. Our public schools will open "next Motida' after a vacation of three weeks. Our teachers have enjoyod a grand PIC NIC during the vacation. Capt. Ingalls Iias the honor of being the first Republican County Treasurer elected since the time of Col. James M. Barney; twenty years ago. Arizona claims the lowest death rate from consumption of any of the political dhisions of the union. It is said few of the native population ever dia of pulmonary trouble. The president has approved an act amending section 3 of an act of March 2, 1889, to withdraw certain public lands from private entry to perfect the title of a quarter of land ih Yuma. The Needles Eye (Cal ), we are pleased to note, is once again under the supervision of its veteran Editor, Dr. J. P. Booth. Two years ago Editor Booth was elected Sheriff of San Bernardino county of that State and filled the office with credit to him self and the county. The Sentinel welcomes him back in the field of .journalism. Vote for Isaac Levy for Mayor, F. L. Ewing and Dr. P. G. Cotter Yor members of the Council. They aresmong our heaviest tax pa'ers, learned and intelligent gentlemen, and are opposed to levying city taxes whatsoever. The City Government under their ever watchful care will be perfectly safe. We acknowledge the receipt of a copy of the New Year's edition of the El Fronterizo, a weekly Spanish news paper, edited and published in Tucson by Carlos I. Velasco. It contains the photograph of President Diaz of Mexico and his cabinet. A finer look ing or more intelligent set of gentle men would be hard to find. Typo graphically it presents a very credit able appearance and will surely be highly appreciated by our Mexican population. F. B. Wig htm an is a candidate for the Chief Clerkship of the Assembly. Mr. Wightman has lived here ever since his boyhood. He has tilled many positions of honor and trust and has acquitted each with credit to him self and his many friends. A Yuma County Citizen has never yet been favored with a Chief Clerkship and wo sincerely hope that the law makers of the next Legislature will not forget Yuma County and her candidate. Mr. Wightman is a brothur-in law of Hon. Eugene J. Trippal, the efficient and popular Register of the U. S Land office at Tucson. Among the many New Year's newspapers received at this office the Los Angeles Morning Herald leads'them all. It contains 3S pages, every page and column of which is re plete with ne.ws matter pertaining to the adjacent counties surrounding the Queen City of California. There can be no doubt luc what it will be One of the greatest advertisements that Los Angeles has ever been favor ed with. If contains a world of in formation for those wishing to learn the resources of that section and those seeking a new home will find it to their advantage to secure a copy. Secretary Bruce has just compiled figures showing the cost of Territorial legislatures and the total will approxi mately apply to the Eighteenth per diem. Members of the house, $5,- S8S, members of the council 2,916 salaries of clerks, 63,060; mileage of members, 1,815; printing, 83,750 fixing halls, 61,500; stationery and sun dries, S300. Total 819,225 for a ses sion of sixty days. Or.e session how ever, fir exceeding the figures. Dur ing Governor Tritle's administration the cost was 880,000. Republican. The City election takes place next Tuesday. Two tickets are in the field. One headed by I. Levy, and the other by the present Mayor, Capt. F. S. Ingalls. The present City Government have done absolutely nothing towaid the improvement of the city. The city property consists of town lots, a great many of which have been sold and the money flitted away for salaries and ser vices instead of being applied for the benefit of the city in the way of paying for the putting in of fire hydrants and the purchase of other suitable fire apparatus so that in case of a fire the same might be extinguished before the city would be destroyed. The Sentinel does not wish to impute anything upon the person ality of the present City Govern ment. They are all good men and citizens, but as members of the City Government they are a failure. Give us a change. The Teachers' Institute, recently in session in Phopnix, ha3 had its inning, an enjoyable affair for those in attend ance, but the felicity of the occasion is marred by a reference to Governor Hughes' report to the Secretary of the Interior for the current year, in which he says the expenditures for the erec tion of school houses alone, in the past two years is over 81 00,000," and tlin value of school property is tabulated by the Territorial Superintendent as aggregating $05,446.32, which enu meration is embodied in the Governor's report, above alluded to, without comment, and therefore receives his averment as correct, as does also his endorsement that $176,040.02 was levied and collected of taxable proper ty and expended in 1893 for the sup port of schools, the pay of teachers and incidental expenses for the year. Nor is this all; his excellency states the bonded indebtedness of counties for school purposes is $208,500. He gives the cost of the Normal School building, at Tempe, at 846,500; the Reforns School at Flagstaff, at 820, 000; but from recent information we are warranted in saying that the cost, when completed, will double that sum, and that the Eighteenth legislative assembly will be asked for further legislation for the completion of those buildings. In view of the facts here enumerated, the question suggests itself. Are not our schools, as at present managed, rather expensive for an already over taxed community to endure without a word of complaint! In view of these figures, are they not suggestive of the liberality of the actor in the rendition of his part, who at night gave away principalities, not having the wherewith to buy his breakfast next morn in". Silver Belt. TnE total railway mileage in the United States on June 30, 1893, was 176,451 07. The total length of track including yards, siding etc., in the United States on the same date was 230,137.27 miles. For the year ending June 30, 1892, the increase in mileage was 3,160.78 miles; but for the year ending June 30; 1893, the in crease in mileage was 4,897.55, But notwithstanding the large increase of 18.3 over 1892 the year 1893 stands below the average of construction for six previous years. For the year 1893 the state of Washington leads in con struction with 557.32 miles closely followed by Montana which shows an increase of 409.96 miles. West Va., with 365.01 JY.iles and Texas with 296.97 miles. California built but 100 miles as did at least half a dozen other states among them New Mexico, Arizona will come in with her show ing in the report of 1894. The com pilation of the work has been one of great magnitude and to those interest ed in this class of statistics the report is of great value. It is issued by the Interstate Commerce Commission. TnE Prescott Courier says: "The business of a newspaper man is to run a newspaper, and if ho is a newspaper man, the. more patronage he gets, the better newspaper he runs. This is the whole thing in a nut shell. In stead of denouncing your home paper, go down and give it the patronage you send to foreign printing houses, and enable it to be a good or better paper. The newspaper is the index of its town. Charles L. Fair's legal adviser propose a plan by which he can con test his father's will and not jeopardize his interest by running afoul of the forfeiture clause. The scheme is for Mrs. Oelrichs and Miss Fair to guar antee that if Charlie loses the suit and forfeits his share they shall equally share with him the remaining two thirds of trust revenue. It is thought Mrs. Oelrichs will not like tho idea of leaving tho management of the estats to the trustees. Doing; or Tumaitcs In Plioc-nlx. Phoenix, A. T., January 3, 1895. Editor of Abizona Sentinel: The holidays being over Phoenix is pre paring herself for what is hoped to be the long-looked-for boom consequent upon the advent of the opening of the new road to Prescott. She is also decking herself in brave array to greet the assemblage of learned lawmakers Who convene here this month. The Council and House chambers are being repainted and thoroughly overhauled, startling from their dark corners the ghosts of long dead legislative scandal and the festive spider from his solitary web. In a few weeks those rooms now silent and lonely will present a scene of bustling activity. Within its walls the old story will be re enacted the upheaval of legislation. This legislator striving to advance the interests of the territory and that one to advance the interest of himself, while Underlying a can be observed silent and sure the influence of the lobby and the mightiness of the "pull'" During the session of the Grand Jury I have seen many familiar Yuma faces here . Judge Duke, his stalwart frame bowed and bent beneath the cares of an ever-increasing family and weighty problems of the law, waits impatiently for the day when he can tear himself away from his arduous duties as a member of the Grand Jury. It was but the other day I met him upon the corner of Center and Washington streets) his countenance drawn with lines of pain and suffering, gentle tears dimmed the lustre of his erstwhile gleaming eye. He longs for the fertile plains of Yuma and the blessings of his home I thought with sympathy, but was cruelly shocked to ascertain it was but the effect of an attack of dyspepsia induced by an abortive attempt to master alone and unaided the eleven courses of a New Year's dinner at the Chinese restaurant. N. N. Wilier is here; suave and courteous as ever, his eyes and the 18-i:aret diamond he gracefully wears upon his manly bosom, have hypnotized the unmarried fair dames of Phoenix and prone at his feet they await but the asking. It is rumored that upon Christmas day with a congenial party he essayed a horseback ride in the suburbs and that in consequence that his meals are served to him on a shelf distanced some four feet from the floor. Captain F. S. Ingalls has been excused from further service upon the Grand Jury and has returned home. F. B. Wightman, looking prosperous and hearty, may be seen from time to time ex tolling the virtues of Yuma county, with a view, I suppose, of obtaining a purchaser for some of the few undisposed of city lsts. Last but not least have I observed A. W. Morris, whose cheerfulness i3 supreme to the adversities and uncertainness of "seven-up.'' Mel Greanleaf arrived here with a batch of witnesses and like the King of France with his thousand men, "marched them up and then marched them back again." Jimmie Dunne, brother of your John Dunne,- is located here and dispenses liquid palatable fluids to the thirsty. Mel Greenleaf says there is an affinity between Jimmie's cocktails and himself and knowing as I do that Mel is an authority upon that subject I take his word for it. The Grand Jury have failed to find a true bill against Howard Windrow, and I think acted justly in the matter. Of the session of the Legislature which will meet shortly I shall write more anon.
