Miles has returned from a trip to the King of Arizona mine. He reports the camp lively. The river Inst week was at low as nineteen and one-half feet but this week registers twenty-two feet. S. H. Drachman, the treasurer of Pima county passed through Yuma Wednesday on routo to the coast. Mrs. June Brown and family of Tucson are visiting with Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Chandler, the parents of Mrs. Brown. Juan Gandolfo left yesterday for San Mateo, California, to resume his studies at St Micheals college located at that plaee. Mr. F.L. Ewing and Miss Edna Greenleaf left Monday for the coast where they will spend the remainder of the summer. The famous "New Royal" Sewing Machines with all its attachments and needles for sale at J. M. Molina's Store for $22.00 each. Howard Masterscn, after an ab sence of three years, returned to Yuma today and expects to remain here permanently. Wm. Rieff has made the hearts of the Sentinel force glad this week by a donation of some of the finest grapes grown on God's footstool. Editor McCutcheon of the El Paso Herald and Dr. Turner, an S. P. Com pany physician, were passengers on Sunday west-bound train. The corner stone of the New Cath olic Chuch was laid Wednesday morn ing with appropriate excercises. The walls of the same are now fast going up. P. B. Hodges this week received a carload of the finest beef cattle that has been shipped into Yuma for some time. The cattle came from Gila Bend. Mrs. C. L. Brown, Mrs. D. L. Rus sell and Miss Belle Sexsmith left on ytsterday's excursion for Los Angeles to reside during the remainder of the summer. Col. Epes Randolph, the popular and courteous superintendent of the Arizona division of the Southern Pacific, viBited Yuma this week on one bf his regular trips. John Stoffela will soon make alter ations in his store building whereby the front of 'the same will be placGd on a line with the Dunne, Baker and Gacdolfo buildings. M. ,S Darling haB made an assign ment for the benefit of his creditors his liabelities are something over $700 with-tets about $500. P. hotel last Sun day Frank Avila, the efficient deputy county recorder, made a rip to Castle Dome this week to look after his min ing interests in that locality Frank is an enthusiastic miner and will some day strike it rich. Senator Ives, president of the State of Arizona Improvement Co., was in Yuma this week on business connect ed with the King of .Arizona mine. The Senator's family now reside at Sliorb, near Los Angele3. P. C. Duboiso of San Francisco and Geo. A. Rice of New York, who have boen investigating to Picacho mines, left Thursday for the coast. They ex press themselves favorably as to the properties in the Picacho district. Chas. Pichenbeck of Los Angeles has been in Yuma this week looking after his various mining interests in this county. Mr. Pichenbeck was in Yuma in the 70's and is one of the best mining men in the Southwest, The weather bulletin reports on Yuma weather a3 follows: Harris burg Plenty of rain during the past week. Grass in abundance and stock looking good. Yuma Tempeiature highest 106; lowest 73. Precipitation .06. An old Mexican, sixty years-five of age was found dead in bed yesterday morning. His name is Jose Padilla, and had been employed as gardner by Santiago Redondo. The Coroner's jury found that he died of natural causes. Circulars came here this weok giv ing description of and offering a re ward of $1750 for the arrest and con viction of the murderer of R. M. Rodgers and Clinton Wingfield, at Camp Verde, Yavapai county, on the night of July 2,1899. R. B. Young, the architect, came in from Los Angeles Sunday to look after the construction of the Catholic church of which he is the architect, and also to be present at the dedica tion and the laying of the corner stone of the structure. A party of prominent Phoenicians passed through Yuma on Yesterday's excursion, Among the party were Captain Alexander, Jerry Millay, Councilman Fickas, J. A. Kurtz, and Judge Baker. The families of most of the gentlemen were present. The 49er saloon was touched for $G5 Thursday morning. The hold-up occured in broad day light and was done while Jack Stwartz, the proprie tor had his back turned on the money which was in a shot sack on a shelf behind the bar. No clue to the bold robber has yet been found. The city council has at last located the fire apparatus, which was a very proper act. The council will erect a building on the lot adjoining the Phoenix restaurant, which was donat ed by John Gandolfo. The building will also be used ai a .city hall, the council having chambers in the same. Joe Heyl has the contract for the erection of the building. City Attorney Pierce Evans return ed last Sunday from an extended trip to the various coast cities. While absent he visited Lcs Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle as well as the smaller cities. Mr. Evans left again Wednesday for a two weeks' stay in Los Angeles. Attorney P. T. Robertson will act as city attorney during the absence of Mr. Evans, and it is needless to say that the law affairs of the city are in good and safe hands. The Yuma Cash Store has changed hand, A. Bienkowski, who has con ducted the same for several montliB past, disposing of his interests to Miss RosaLe Roune. Charley willshortly make a trip over the county for re creation and rest as well as to keep his eyepeelled for mining investments. Mr. Bienkowski desires to ( issue a notice to the public thanking his customers for the liberal patronage bestowed upon him and bespeaks a liberal share of the same to his suc cessor. Harry Neahr, one of the business men of Fortuna, wag in town the first part of the week. While here Mr. Neahr had some postal cards printed for the various business men of that town to be sent out to different min ing camps and villages throughout the country warning hotel men, bar bers, etc., to look out for a certain brace of miners who took the pipe line out of Fortuna'between two days immediately after pay day, leaving their creditors to whistle for satisfac tion. Mr. Neahr says that several miners have lately taken the French mode of departure and thinks the sending out of warnings to the var ious other camps will have a salutary effect upon those who may contem plate giving creditors the grand bounce and skipping by the light of the moon. Tho warning reads as fol lows: "Look out for Rod Dewar and Tom Kelly. These two parlies took the pipe lino out of Fortuna, leaving bar bills, barber bills and board bills unpaid. ' The Williams News says providence permitting, and the Santa Fe freight trains being on time, track-laying will commence on tho Santa Fe & Grand Canyon railroad on or about the 15th of the present month. Captains Mellon and Polhamus re turned Thursday with the steamer Mohave from the Needles. They have been transporting mining machinery to a point about forty miles above the Needles, one mine being located on tho Arizona side of tho river and one on the Nevada side. Captain Mellon reports considerable activity in mines and mining in that locality, and will return in October, at which time he has a contract to transport several hundred tons of mining machinery to point3 up the river from Needles. This story is told of a man who mar ried and took his wife to a claim in the strip. An acquaintance who visited them some time later found them in a sod cabin. It was the noon hour and the wife had prepared the meal and for a table used her kneading board, over which a napkin was spread and the board held on her lap. On mak ing his report to Wichita friends as to how he found the young people living he described the style as magnificent, and as an explanation he said, were he the owner of the young man's furni ture he would not take $10,000 for the legs of the table. Florence Tribuno. Judge Kaltenback was yesterday appointed justice of the peace of Gila Bend district. He has been the jus tice for that district for many years and resigned last summer to go to California. He did not like Califor nia and has again returned to Gila Bend. Since his return he has been endeavoring to be reinstated, but the supervisors did not think it was neces sary to conduct a peace office there as the precinct is hardly large enough. A petition, endorsed by nearly every resident of that district was presented to the board yesterday by Sheriff King and the judge was appointed. Enterprise. After we have clinohed our "ex pansion" policy so that the sun can never set upon the American eagle, it will be worth the while of think ing men to consider that there is ample opportunity for "interior" expansion in the reclamation of some millions of acres of splendid land lying right in the heart of the country. "When Congress gets ready to vote a few millions for the Orient, let it also appropriate some thing to give the West the storage reservoirs she wants and thus make fertile her deserts in the interests of American home builders. The Land Grant. The following communication from Chief Justice Reed to District Attor ney Brown will prove of interest : "Council Bluffs, la., Aug. 8. Dear Sir: I have your communica tion of the 1st, with tho accompan- ing petition of certain citizens with reference to the Algodones land grant. The case was recently disposed of by the supreme court, but the mandate had not been sent down to this court the court of private land claims when we adjourned at Tucson in June. The court will hold a term there in No vember, when I have no doubt a final order of dismissal will be entered. When that order shall have been made our jurisdiction will end, and all questions as to entries of the land will be within the jurisdiction of the department of the interior. Mayor Shansaey, Councilmen Heyl, Tapia, Neahr and Willis, City Attorn ey, Marshall and recorder being presen t J. W. Dorrington submitted a report on tho Althee Modesti sewer system which was read and filed. The City Marshall submitted his re port, which was read and filled. The report showed the collections for the month to be $82.50 less 25 per cent. " The City treasurer also submitted his report. Which was read and laid over until next meeting. The following bills were ordered paid Fred Fredley $15.50; Arizona Sentinel $2.50; O. F. Townsend $6.25; Geo. A. Duke, commision on sale of lots $169. The bill of Levy & Co. was laid over until the next meeting. Tho marshall was instructed to col lect the assessment on improvements on Madison avenue. An ordinance was read and approved to forbid kids from jnmping on and off the moving cars in the railroad yards. John Stoffela made application fir a permit to alter his building on Main street and the City recorder was order ed to issue tho same. Two bids were received for the construction of a fire house and city hall on Gandolfo'a lot adjoining the Phoenix restaurant. A bid by Rathburn for $825 was rejeoted and the bid of Joe Heyl for $425 was ac cepted. The building will be a frame structure 30 by 40 feet.
