It is understood that an eflbrt will
bo made at the coming sessiou of the
legislature to carve Clark county out
of Yavapai, .leromo is tho prospeo
tivo oounty seat of tho new county.
Though sometimes deceptive, ap
pearanocs count for a great deal in
business. As men are judged by ap-
Dearancex, so are business houses
judged by their advertising literature.
They say that one of the last mes
sages the Into Marcus Daly received
from tho world which ho was leaving
was oue of kindly sympathy from Will
iam A. Clark, the man he had fought
politically, but fought in the open
Tho United States supremo court
moves slowly, aud tho chances are that
tho eaes to test thu couktitutioi.ality of
tho Porto Iticnn tariff will be heard
when that august body gets ready to
hear them. The attorney general's no
tion in securing a further postponement
for a mouth looks very much as if his
client was in no particular hurry to
gut a decision.
Tho sale of thu Arizona Republican
is to be regretted, as it loses to Ari
zona one of the brightest uuuepnuvr
men in tho southwest. Mr. 0. C
Randolph has tnndo u great success of
tho Republican, which is today ,far in
advance of any other daily paper pub
lished m Arizona. Wo hope that tho
now management may succeed iu main
taining tho Republican at its present
high standard.
EXPIATED THEIR GRIME.
Thomas and William Haldurman
ptid the penalty with their lives, at
Tombstone, last Friilny, for the cow
ardly murder of Constable Chester
Aioswortu and deputy, Teddy Moore.
Thrico had a ttay of execution beeu
sociirtd; first, through appeal to the
suprema court, then by intervention of
President MeKinloy, who granted tho
condemned men a reprieve for sixty
days, till October 10, and finally tGov-
eruor X. O. Murphy gavo them a fnr-j
ther respite until November 10, that
he might review the case, he having
been absent from tho territory until
tho first week in October.
Strouuous efforts were made to save
tho necks of the condemned murderers.
Appeals from influential sources in
Texas and oltowhero wero received;
an attempt was mado to discredit a
part of the testimony introduced iu
the trial of the prisoners for tho mur
der of Moor-v and able couusel argued
tho case in vheir behalf, but to the
credit of Actiug Governor Akers, bo it
said, ho refused to interfere Oover
nor Murphy, upon his rjturu to tho
territory, reviewed tho case thoroughly
aud fouud nothing to justify executive
cleiuenoy, and permitted the righteous
judineut of the eotirts ,'o be carried out
and the law to bo vindicated
The llalderniuus hoped up to tho
last moment that the executive arm
would be iuterposed to saro thorn Iroiu
the gallows, but whan thu hour of ex
ecution came they exhibited no fear
Some liiuy attribute it to bravery or
that they had fouud Jesus. In our
opiuiou it was neither, but sunpfy tho
preponderance of bruto over intellect,
the same qualities or laok of them
which accounts for the stoicism of the
Indian.
Thu story of the condemned men's
bdariug, their maudlin statements nu
the gallows, aud especially their
prayers to nu offended dioty are div
gnsting to a sound mind. If it is harder
for a camel to pats through the oyo of
a needle than for a rich man to enter
the Kingdom of Heaven, it is assuredly
a' thousand times more improbabln
that tho slayer of his fellow man shoiil.I
find favor with the Creator and for
giveness for his heuious crimo. There
ia in Arizona too much louiouoy aud
sympathy shown thu murder, and too
short a memory for tho victim of his
ruthlessuess and tho poignant grief of
tho beroft family.
