Page 6 Personality Profile LEE ACKERMAN Lee Ackerman, 39 - year -old Phoenix businessman and invest ment banker who recently an nounced his cadidacy for Gov ernor of Arizona on the Demo cratic party primary ticket, soon Will be making his “debut” as a television celebrity. In appearing on the new TV series, “Sweet Success,” Acker man will be joining an exclusive company. He will be one of 39 Americans whose rise to success will be dramatized on the Jackit Productions series. The 30 - minute Ackerman Story, which will be televised over KVAR, Channel 12, in the near future,.was filmed in Phoe nix, New York City and other parts of the country pertinent to his. life. Ackerman was selected as the only Arizonan in the “Sweet Success” series because of his widely diversified interests and activities in the business field, entertainment, government and civic work. The documentary film will trace Ackerman’s rise to suc cess,;, ..from ~.childhood - .through college*' and-" Air Force combat service in World War II to his start as a cub reporter with the Arizona Republic and his branch ing out into a wide field of busi ness and banking activities. Washington One question, however, is puzz ling many of Ackerman’s friends and business and civic associates. And that is: How can Ackerman’s wide range of activities and achieve ments be packed into a half hour show? This wonderment is under standable, for Ackerman, who is basing his campaign for Govern or of Arizona on a dynamic 14- point Plan for Progress for the State, has had a career almost as fabulous as the growth of Ari zona. Ackerman and his wife, Leslie, came to Phoenix from Boston in 1946, after they had completed a nation-wide good will air tour for the National Aeronautical Association and the Governors of the six New England States. Ackerman went to work as a cub reporter for the Arizona Re public, was advanced to avia tion editor and then was named public relations director for the Republic and Gazette. Possessing a strong, faith in Arizona’s future potential, Ack erman, from this beginning, suc cessfully entered and expanded operations in a wide variety of business endeavors. At one time, he and his associates controlled more than a million acres of land in Arizona. JARRETT HARDWARE 401 East Adams Telephone AL 4-4183 THE ARIZONA SUN however, Ackerman has dispos ed of some 95 per cent of his land holdings, to concentrate on his activities in the investment banking, securities and insurance felds. But Ackerman did not confine his activities to business. He served two years in the State Legislature, during which he headed an investigation of the Welfare Department which pro duced dramatic changes in the handling of needed assistance to the aged and blind. In addition, he has taken an active part in many community activities through the years. He initiated the Arizona Golden Gloves Tournament, the Soap Box Derby, the State Square Dance Festival, the Maricopa County Marbles Tournament. He was associate chairman of Arizona for the March of Dimes, president of the Arizona Medical Committee to raise funds for scholarships for nurses and tech nicians, a member of President Eisenhower’s Committee on Traf fic Safety, chairman of the board for the Greater Arizona Heart Association. Today, Ackerman is state chairman for the 1960 Easter Seals Drive for Crippled Chil dren, and has found time in his busy schedule to work for the United Fund Advance Gifts cam paign, as well as serving on the board of directors of the Arizona Traffic Safety Foundation. In the field of education, Ack erman started the Grady Gam mage Memorial Scholarship to honor the memory of the man who developed Arizona State University from a small agricul tural college to a major univer sity in 15 years. And, in the field of human relations, Ackerman appointed Lincoln Ragsdale as the first Negro in the entire United States to sit on the board of directors of an all-white Sav ings and Loan Association. This is just a part of the Lee Ackerman Story the story of a onetime newspaper carrier boy who has made a success of his life. It will be interesting to see this story come to life on our TV screens.
