Green Joins Red Sox
Chicago -- Elijah (Pumpsie)
Green, 24-year-old shortstop,
took the field for the Boston
Red Sox and finished what
Jackie Robinson and Larry
Doby started 12 years ago.
It was in 1947 that Robin
son, now retired, became the
nrst of his race to ever play
with a major league team
when the old Brooklyn Dodgers
called him up from the minors.
He subsequently became one
of the National League’s fin
est players.
That same year, Cleveland
of the American League sum
moned Larry Doby who soon
became a regular for the In
dians.
Since then every team in the
major leagues has had a Negro
their roster at one time or
another—except the Boston
Red Sox—who maintained they
would call a Negro player
when they developed one of
major league caliber in their
farm system.

Labor Board
Dismisses Charge
An unfair labor practice
charge filed against Phoenix
Newspapers, Inc. has been
dismissed by the National La
bor Relations Board.
David Johnson, 1843 E. Atlan
ta, charged June 2 he had been
fired because of union activity.
He was a paper handler.
NLRB Regional Director Ralph
E. Kennedy of Los Angeles said:
“The above-captioned case
charging a violation under Sec
tion 8 of the National Labor Re
lations Act, as amended, has
been carefully investigated and
considered.
“As a result of the investiga
tion, it appears that, because
there is insufficient evidence of
violation, v further proceedings
are not warranted at this time. I
am, therefore, refusing to issue
complairft in this matter."
Kennedy’s decision was dated
July 28. Parties have-10 days
after receipt to seek a review of
the action.
