Seven other states (Arkansas, Louisiana, Florida, Georgia/ North Carolina, Ten nessee and Virginia) have in tegrated on a token basis, with less than 1 per cent of the Negro pupils in school with whites. In Louisiana, integration has reached only one school district. That is New Orleans, where there are 38,217 white and 56,095 Ne gro elementary pupils, and only twleve of the Negroes are attend ing school with whites. TURNABOUT SEGREGATION ON BEALE STREET MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A Negro case owner who refused to serve a white couple at his restaurant last week was sharply criticized by the Memphis NAACP. The case of "segregation in I reverse" occurred Thursday as- I ternoon at a case on Beale Ave. John L, Davis, the proprietor, I called police when a white couple I refused to leave. Mr. Davis said he thought | trouble was going to start because some of the Negro customers re- I <sented the white people. Arrested and booked on dis- I orderly conduct charges were David Franklin, 24, of Waco, I Texas, and Mrs. Bertha Weir of 1545 Victor. Mr. Franklin was fined s2l. Mrs. Weir did not appear in court and forfeited ssl. NAACP officials raised the question of a Negro case woner discriminating against whites. It was pointed out that this action violates the principles of the NAACP and creates a bad situa tion since Negroes in Memphis are fighting for total desegre gation. Numerous downtown stores recently opened their door to all races. In court. City Judge Boushe j asked Mr. Davis, "Haven’t you heard about integration? " Mr. Davis said, "I've been so busy running my case I haven't had any time to fool with it." The judge asked Mr. Frank lin if he didn't know it was not customary for whites to enter Negro cases in Memphis. "Well, I’ve learned it," said Mr. Franklin, paying his fine.
