George Johnson, pastor of the House of Prayer Church Pictorial Weekly PHOENIX 40, ARIZONA BR 6—2301 TEN CENTS 5 NAMED ON HOUSING APPEALS BOARD BY MAYOR Mayor Sam Mardian, Jr., has appointed five Phoenix citizens to the newly organized Board of Housing Appeals for the new city housing cods. The boardhasbeen approved by the city council and will be sworn in Tuesday. The board will consist of: Dr. Ben P. Frissell, 550 W. Thomas; J. R. Vance, 3423 E. Montecito; Attorney H. B. Daniels, 2801 N. Fifth Ave. (3-year terms); Mrs. Bartley Skinner Jr., 825 E.Mar lette; and Bennie M. Gonzales, 4038 W. Van Buren (2-year terms). Creation of the board was de signed to offset previous criti cisms of the code, particularly of inspections objected to by property owners. POWELL CHARGES DISCRIMINATION WASHINGTON - Rep. Adam C. Powell refuted charges that his office and staff operation in Con gress differ from other con gressmen. He told an investigat ing committee that charges made by Sen. John J. Williams, Rep.- Del., were inaccurate, misstated and some lies. Powell stated that he was be ing attacked because he was a Negro. The veteran politician from Harlem said, “I don’t want to have any more than any other congressman. But by the grace of God, I’m not going to take any less I” FIRST NEGRO WOMAN CPA IN U.S. RICHMOND, Virginia - Mrs. Ruth C, Harris became the first Negro woman to qualify as a cer tified public accountant. She is an Instructor and head of the commerce department at Virginia Union University. Mrs. Harris holds a bachelor degree of business administra tion, from Virginia State College and a master of business admin istration from New York Univer sity. Forest Fire Prevention NAACP HEAD ROY WILKINS ACCEPTS CHECK FOR NATIONAL FREEDOM FUND Rev. George Brooks, president of the local chapter of NAACP, wears a happy smile as Mr. Roy Wilkins, executive secretary of the National Association for the Advancement for Colored People ac cepts a check amounting to more than SI,OOO from Dr. Lowell Wormley, gen. chairman of the NAACP Emancipation Proclamation program held in Jan. Mr. Wilkins accepted the check for the Freedom Fund of the National organization. REV. & MRS. MUNDY CELEBRATE NINTH YEAR Rev. and Mrs. J. O. The PLT version of the Critics Award drama written by Lorraine Hansberry, is the first play written by a Negro and starring Negroes which has won the coveted award.
