AME BISHOPS
VISIT WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON - A delegation
of AME bishops visited Pres.
Kennedy at the White Hbiise last
week. Their purpose wail to com
memorate the centennial of
'Bishop Daniel A. Payne’s two
visits with Pres. Lincolninlß62,
when Payne urged Lincoln to sign
the Emancipation Proclamation.
Bishop Payne was also the
I founder of Wilberforce Univer
sity in Ohio in 1856. Wilber
force was the first institution
of higher learning owned and
operated by American Negroes.
The African Methodist Epis
copal Church was organized by
Richard Allen in 1787.
Bishop Sherman L. Greene, of
the second district, read a letter
of commendation to President
Kennedy for his efforts In im
proving civil rights.

singer denies:?'
ROBBERY ATTEMPT
LOS ANGELES - Rock and roll
singer Johnny Morisette, 27,
found his notes a bit sour when
two young ladies threw whiskey in
his face and accused him of
attempted robbery.
The singer denied charges of
Miss Ann Brown and Ruth Gur
ley, who said he became abusive
and struck one of them*.
Morisette said the
agreed to date him and a friend
and when they asked for cash the
men left the car.
He said the women became
abusive and he only struck them
after they threw whiskey in his
eyes. Miss Brown’s injured lip
required three stitches.
Johnny, whose hit tune, ’Don’t
Turn Your Love On Too Strong,”
is a current favorite. He said
