Additional Local* and Items of Interest. They Couldn't Slnjf. Lust Wednesday evening, a little at tor seven o'clock, three women were walking down Seward street in Juneau. They seemed cheerful and happy and laughed and talked as they passed the Newsman. Going to church, or per haps prayer meeting, thought the wri ter, for they seemed to have such good, christian faces. The News man thought no more of the interesting trio and hur ried along to Third street, but on his return he observed the three women standing in the street at the cornor of Front and Seward facing toward the postotHce. They had a book from which they were singing, and their voices rang out so loud, so clear in the pure evening air that the writer stopped to hear. Presently a man came down Seward street. The women were near the sidewalk, and the pedestrian, as ho neared the sweet singers, put hi9 hat in correct position on his head, curled the ends of his mustache with his lingers, hut just as he was about to exhibit one of those "please look at me" smiles, his feet slipped and let the man down at full length on the icy sidewalk. The celer ity of his movements in getting up would have surprised an engineer of a fast mail train, but he finally gathered himself together and scampered off where he could not l>e seen. As soon as the man got onto his feet one of the women quit singing, and laugh, you ought to have seen her. Then another one of the trio stopped short and she too could no longer contain her mirth. No doubt her corset kept her sides from a dangerous expansiou. Up to this time the third woman continued in the song?it had boon changed from a trio to a solo?but the mirth of her sis ters was too much for her, and the sing ing stopped, but only for an instant. Then one would sing a few words and stop and laugh, another would tako up the song to be relieved by the third and the poor things just laughed and tried to sing until the end of the verso when all further efforts ceased. These good true women came onto the street to do God's will, to teach Christ and Him cru cified, to tell the beautiful story to those wicked Juneau people who do not go to church, but the poor things made a failure, and all because a man fell down. A Cheerful Liar. A Texas boy who came to Alaska last February wrote his sister a letter which sho sent to an eastern paper, from which we take the following extract: "Juneau, Alaska, is an old Esquimaux village aud 1 was much interested in watching the Esquimaux with their dogs and reindeer pulling their sleds. It is too cold for cattle and horses here as they have ice and snow the year round, and in winter the days are only a few hours long. Our voyage onded at Skaguay and when I saw all the snow and ice I began to wish I were at home." Juneau is not an Esquimaux village, there are none of those peoplo there. The boy probably saw some Indians. He did not see any reindeer, for there are none used in Juneau, and ho did not see any Indians using dogs in pull ing sleds, for the Indians haven't enough sense to to make such good use of dogs. The statement that it is too cold for cattle and horses in this part of Alaska is not only an unmitiga ted lie, but wilfully so, for all the haul ing is dono with horses, besides, Juneau and Douglas City each have a flno dai ry, with a large number of cows, and other cattle. Daylight continues du ring February from six to eight hours. The letter published in the eastern pa per is a continuation of lies from be ginning to end. The boy was probably sent here to reform him, but he seems to have grown worse. Wo have been in ^ * **' a nlon Alaska tor more man u jwu, ?>o 4UOV/ know the eastern climate, and the win ters around Juneau are not near so cold as iu the eastern or western states. This descendant of Annanias in writ ing of his trip from Victoria to Juneau, says: "Mountains covered with snow, huge icebergs and glaciers along the coast on one side of us and the deep blue sea on tho othor." Off again. During all that distance reforred to there are but few places where the ocean can be seen in coming ?Queen Charoltte's Sound and Dixon's Entrance. Across each of these it is a three or four hour's run for the Queen. Wo regret that that Texas boy's name and post office address is unknown to us. The people of the earth should bo warned of his lying qualifications. The dog show on tho sidewalk near the Louvre on Front street in Juneau last Wednesday evening drew a large crowd. It was free to everybody. It was a nice gentle rain wo had last Friday. Alaska Treadwell Gold mining Co. DOUGLAS ISLAND, ALASKA, U. S. A.
