The Douglas Island News. (CONTINUED FROM FIRST I\UiE.) and both came up looking well. Me; lauded on Kid's face. The Kid gave j him as good as he sent. Again they ex changed blows. The Kid landed 011 Mc's face. It was give and take when time was called, alter which referee I Fletcher stepped to the center of the i ring and said that Mc had hit the Kid after time was called and he gave the decision to the Kid on a foul. Of course the crowd was disappoint ed, but the decision of the referee is, we understand, admitted by Mc to bo correct. The men looked well after Hie con test and eacli received congratulations from his friends. How the contest would have ended no one knows, for the men were both in good trim. The Kid no doubt was at a disadvantage on account of having had a broken hand, which prevents him from striking as heavy a blow as he did before the accident, while Mc Laughlin lacked in training and ring experience. The whole exhibition showed a lack of force to the blows, but a few hard licks were landed during the eleven rounds. Additional Locals and Items of Interest. Mr. Schell went to Juneau Thursday.' M r. Our first News extra was issued last Wednesday night and was sold by the newsboys of Douglas Island and Ju neau early on Thursday morning. It was a full sized sheet and met with a ready sale. It was issued for the pur pose of giving t he public a full and ear ly account of the glove contest held in this city, an account of which was re written and appears in this, our regular issue. The News is here to do busiuess, and long ago the people of Douglas Is land and Juneau discovered that our sleepy contemporaries are altogether too slow, that they must look to the News for the news. In this extra we inserted all our regular standing ads and business locals free of charge, thereby giving our patrons the benefit of two issues last week. Use Garlic and Onions. Capt. Hell is becoming a veritable Uobson. A few weeks ago we ineu . tioned how a young woman insisted 011 kissing the Captain and really accom plished her purpose. And now we are, told, and truthfully too, that the gay young captain was Hobsonizod by a i number of girls 011 board the Lone Fisherman while making a trip to Ju j neau last Wednesday night. This nev-' er will do, and the Captain knows it, for he has recently taken to smoking an old cob pipe and plug tobacco, as a ( preventative to such occurrences, but even that wouldn't save him. The con -1 ditions require heroic measures, and i we advise the Captain to eat garlic and | onions. You can test the desired strength with a pair of dentist's forceps. ! The following has been going the rounds, but is just as funny as ever to those who never read it: 4,Two brothers recently appeared at the portals of the Yankton insane asyl um, one of them to be incarcerated there as a patient, the other having him in charge as far as the asylum. They were dressed very much alike, and the casual observer on the train would uot have detected signs of insanity in either. The asylum manager was in a quandary. He chatted with his vis itors until a late hour and then locked them in a room together. Then he telegraphed the authorities at the town where the brothers lived: Two men from your town arrived today; both dressed alike: one calls himself Bill and talks about constructing an air line to the moon; the others goes by the name of Dave and advocates free coinage of silver: which shall I keep?' ** j i Alaska Treadwell Gold Mining Co. ] DOUCiLAS ISLAND, ALASKA, U.
