It is reported that an order has been made by the Atlin authorities that all person* having claims must appearand represent the same in person on or be fore April 1st, otherwise they will be forfeited. We do not vouch for the truth of this report, but, if true, it is iu keeping with the exclusion act itself. Americans can rest assured that it will be made unpleasant for them in that district and no opportunity will be al lowed to pass to declare the forfeiture of claims owned by Americans. Early Closing. The merchants of Juneau are about to adopt a uniform hour for closing their stores." Eight o'clock will proba-, My be the hour agreed on and we think the movement will meet with the ap proval of everybody. Juneau has a lot of good, hard-working clerks, and to give them an extra hour in the evening won Id. no doubt, be much appreciated and would be of no loss to the employ ers. Good, II True. Fort Wraujrel Journal. A. (i. McBridc, the? editor-in-chief of the Douglas Island News, was a visitor iu Wraugol this week. Mac made the Journal a pleasant call and expressed his delight at being able to visit the old town. Brother McBride is one of Che l>ost newspaper men in Alaska, and Douglas Island should be proud of him and his great religions weekly. To Knights of Pythias. Among those who returned from the Copper River country ou the Woleott in January were Hermau Domberowski ?we don't know how he managed to climb over the Valdes glacier aud not drop about half of it down a crevasse, but he assures us that he still retains his full name intact?who is now work ing in the new mill at Tread well. Mr. Yakshaw is a tinner iu Juueau: Mr. Krietzberg has returned to his old hcune in Iowa; Mr. Botts is a waiter in a Juueau restaurant, while Messrs. Joues aud Coou have gone to Porcu pine. Of the (51 prospectors who came back to civilization at that time they have scattered to the four wiuds, per haps nevermore to meet again in this world. At the Catholic Church. The little Catholic church was crowded to its utmost last Sunday at the morning service, although nothing annsnal, excepting a very bright, sunny day, tended to bring the people out. "The building is entirely too small and the proposed new church the coming summer will be hailed with delight. In very few places is to be found the Christian harmony existing in Douglas i City; mauy of the same faces are to be seen at both Catholic and protestant services, and the patients and Sisters of St. Ann's Hospital are nearly always remembered in the prayers in the pro testant churches. Father Bougis' ser mon was broad, practical, and impress ive. He speaks with earnestness, and evinces the culture and learning he ad mires in the true Christian. In the course of his sermon he expressed many tiue thoughts, among which he said in substance: the learned man is the best Christian, l>ecanse he brings not only his heart, but bis trained in tellect into service. He claimed a per son was responsible for bis disbelief as long as he neglected the means of en lightenuieut.wheu he discards religious motives, represses religious sentiment, despises religious practices, aud absents himself from all religious services. The New Bridges. Some of our energetic, industrious citizens have taken it npon themselves to build bridges over the stream that intersects North Secoud and Third streets. Many of the heavy timbers are on the ground and we are informed the work will be pushed as rapidly as possible from now ou. Some planking , is yet needed and we hope that all will cooperate in helping ou the work in every way possible. The Rev. If. J.Gnrr will hold services next Sunday evening in the Odd Fel lows' Hall at 8 p. m. A cordial invita tion is extended to all. THE STAR BREWERY, DOUGLAS CITY, uvw JOHN EGAN, Proprietor. wwv\ W !
