Winters left on the Ramona, en route to the sunny South, where he hopes to improve his health. Mr. R. J. Sluggett, of the Roady Bui- ' liou Mill was a south-bound passenger ; on the Ramoua. W. O. Angell i9 back at his old posi tion in the machine shop. Various improvements are being made in the residence portion of Treadwell. Among these may bo noted the steps which are being built up the hill in frout of the home of Mr. James Dauiels, and the safety rail which is beiug placed along the ascent to Tread well Heights. There i9 also quito a tendency being shown toward the use of steam heat. Several dwellings are J now heated iu this way, and Mr. R. J. I Willis has decided to add his new home to the list. The barge "John C. Potter" has fin-j ished loading her cargo of sulphurets and is now awaiting the arrival of the j tug "Pilot." |* ? ? - * "n J I If anyone tfnuKs me ireauwennw , are going hungry on Christmas Day he j is much mistaken. 2500 lbs. of turkey | have been ordered for the joyful oc casion and aro duo to arrive on the Cottage City. A limited number of of these very noble birds, together with other Christmas dainties, will j be for sale at the Tread well Mar ket. But you will have to speak quick ly if you want your share. Some folks are always getting left, but you are not one of them, are you? As usual a big Christmas dinner, with turkey aud all the other good things on the bill of fare, will be pro pared at the boarding houses as a holi day feast for the employes of the Tread well Company. This is ono of the two days out of the three hundred and sixty-five when the vast organiza tion stops for a breathing space. Santa Claus is due to arrive in Tread well on Dec. 25, via North Pole, with an extra large load of joy aud Christmas gladness. We do hope he won't miss your house. AT THE CLUB. Since the arrival of the small balls, | the bowling alleys have been in great demand on Ladies'' Day. Last Friday considerable enthusiasm was manifest ed and five o'clock came only too soon. Match games are again becoming the rage. The first match game bowled on the new alleys came off last Saturday night between the Juneau Juniors and the Treadwell Tigers. Ira Frame of the Juueau team, Ed. Sheldon and Ed. Christoe of the Treadwell team made the highest averages, the Tigers beat ing by 217 pius. Call again, boys. Capt. Feri is of Treadwell Fire Com pany No. 2, has publicly challenged Capt. Mark Smith of Company No. 3, to a match game of ten pins, to be bowled on the club alleys by members of the two compauies, at any time des ignated by the challenged parties. It isn't in human nature to take a dare, so we shall probably hear of another game shortly. The last dance given at the Treadwell Club was not so well attended as usual owing to counter attractions elsewhore. A Dancing Club is being organized, which will take charge of the matter of giving dances. Quite a large number have expressed their desire to become members, and this bids fair to become au enjoyable feature of the uew club. The library committee is at work se lecting new books. They have decided to extend the list by sending an order for about 300 volumes, which, with the ones already in circulation, will make a fair sized library. Bring in the books you have read anp get new ones! The library committee will appreciate your assistance in gathering together the outstanding volumes. Considerable progress was made I toward perfecting the organization of j the Treadwell Fire Department at the meeting held last Friday evening. After the call to order by the chair and the reading of the minutes of the previous meeting, the temporary heads of fire companies, appointed last week, report ed membership as follows: Company No. 1,25; No. 2,43; No. 3, 19; No. 4, 50; No. 5,24. A recess was declared du ring which the companies assembled separately for the purpose of electing their own captains- These as reported on resuming business were: No. 1, R. McFarland; No. 2, L. S. Ferris; No. 3, Mark Smith; No. 4, George Beare; No. ! 5, Alex. McConaghey. Harry Tretton was unanimously cho sen chief of the entire department. It was decided that the captains and chief should constitute a committee to form ulate plans for action, fire signals, etc., which should be submitted at the regu lar meetings. Suggestions and helpful : ideas would be gladly received from 1 I any source and should be handed in in j writing to the chief or captains. Supt. Kinzie manifested a very active interest iu the organization aud assured the uew fire department that the mau- < agement would second their efforts by ? furnishing tiro apparatus and in auy | other way possible. The Douglas baud was preseut and | played several selections. The meet ings will be continued for some time, j the next one being held next Friday j evening. From now until Christmas we will sell all Holiday goods at Cost. TREADWELL STORE. A SUCCESSFUL SOCIAL. Northern Light Rebekah Lodge and | Aurora Encampment gave an exceed ingly pleasant social at Odd Fellows' Hall on last Saturday evening. Cards? | dancing, and vocal solos by Mr. Alex. Miller furnished entertainment. Miss Mildred Powell presided at the piano. Prizes were awarded at the card tables as follows: First prize for ladies, box j of fancy select candies, Mrs. L. A. i Freestone; consolation prize, Mrs. L. H. Keist; First prize for gentlemen, a pack of souvenir playing cards, David Brown; consolation, D. L. Rood. Re freshments were served, consisting of I sandwiches, coffee, cake, Salads, candy, ' and cigars. AT CHRISTMAS TIME When everybody is expecting some nice present, an article of furniture may just fill the bill. Did you ever ; think of that? On one of the last boats 11 received a large shipment which in ; eluded such articles as Morris easy ! chairs, Iron beds, bureaus, springs, ; mattresses, &c. S. district court at Juneau last Monday. The jury re turned a verdict of guilty as charged, without the recommendation for com mutation of sentence to life imprison ment, which is given to Alaska juries by the statute.
